  1. 1.00DECA/COOP Overview Goal:To understand the basic content of the Marketing course as part of the Marketing Education program.

  2. Marketing Education • Courses Taught in the Marketing Ed. Program: • Marketing • Sports and Entertainment Marketing I/II • Strategic Marketing • Travel and Tourism Marketing • Fashion Merchandising

  3. What is involved?“3 parts of the Marketing Program” • Classroom instruction • Marketing Work Experience (COOP) • DECA

  4. Work Based Learning Strategies(COOP) • A program designed to give students an option to receive an additional graduation credit for satisfactorily working a part time job. • 70% of students grade is derived from Employer Evaluation, 30% from wage/hour forms filled out weekly • Basic Rules: • 1. You must keep a job all semester long. No job = Failing grade for quarter! • 2. If you change jobs, you must find another job • 3. You receive a 2nd elective credit for COOP in addition to your Marketing class grade. • 4. 135-150 hours/ semester, approx. 8 hours per week. • 5. Fired = Failing grade for that quarter and the two week rule still applies. • 6. You may be dropped from COOP at the discretion of the Advisor.

  5. COOP Jobs • Advertising/Display • Cashier • Sales Associate • Counterperson (Service, etc) • Stock Clerk • Telemarketer • Customer Service Representative • Waiter/Waitress/Host/Management • Cannot do childcare, lawncare, etc. • Questions??

  7. What is DECA? DECA’s full name is: DECA: An Association of Marketing Students DECA is a co-curricular club for Marketing Students. DECA is a part of your Marketing Class, but membership is optional.   8. What is DECA? (cont.) • DECA is a worldwide club with over 3,500 chapters in the US, DC, Canada, China, Guam, Puerto Rico, Korea, Mexico, The US Virgin Islands, Germany and Hong Kong. • DECA has over 200,000 members worldwide and over 7,000 members here in North Carolina

  9. What is DECA? (cont.) A student organization that: • Maintains a series of competitive events. District, State, International • Offers awards and recognition through competition • Offers college scholarships.

  10. Why should I join DECA? • Sense of belonging • Group participation • Motivational involvement • Competitive involvement • Personal growth and development • Better, more self-confident Leader

  11. Who can join DECA? • Any motivated, hard working student taking a marketing education course such as marketing, sports and entertainment marketing, travel and tourism or fashion merchandising.

Basic Facts • Colors: Blue and gold • Blue represents sincerity • Gold represents success • Emblem: Diamond • Four points on the DECA diamond: • academically prepared for college and careers in marketing, finance, hospitality or management • community oriented by gaining an appreciation for the benefits of service and their potential impact on the community and world • professionally responsible with ethics, integrity and high standards • experienced leaders by practicing key leadership skills such as goal setting, consensus building and project management.
