3. The Purpose of the Afternoon To ensure students/parents are aware of all options available. To enable students and parents to look in detail at the subjects of choice To clarify the applications procedure. To answer questions that both students and parents may have.

4. Why Barking Abbey? Familiarity for students. School environment not college An Outstanding 6th form with fantastic results and is in top 25% of schools in the COUNTRY Quality and experience of Teaching staff. Very highly developed Higher Education Programme. The Entitlement Programme. Very good support network. Beware the grass is not always greener!

5. Monitoring Students will be individually mentored every � term Termly Reports and one parents evening Target setting by departments Referral System. Regular tracking and progress monitoring. Attendance and punctuality monitoring

6. The Choices available Level 3 BTEC Diplomas (equivalent to 1, 2 or 3 A levels) 3 or 4 AS levels Can mix AS and BTEC level 3 Personal Instructor Course CSLA Course Re-sits ONLY with courses as above

7. Level 3 BTEC Diplomas BTEC Diplomas in Business, Dance, Science or Sports Science. Extended Diploma 18 units = 3 A� Levels (2 Year) Diploma 12 units = 2 A� Levels (2 Year) Subsidiary Diploma 6 units = 1 A� Level (1 or 2 Year) Portfolio of evidence required No exams � all coursework based May be combined with �A� Levels� as blocking allows

8. Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and A2 Levels AS = 2 units of study in Year 12. A2 = 2 units of study in Year 13. Choose 3 or 4 AS Levels in Year 12 Usually take 3 A2 Levels in Year 13 Graded A*-E for a pass, U= Fail Exams/coursework varies by subject. Progression onto A2 dependent on passing AS levels and Year 12 academic record.

CSLA/HSLA/Duke of Edinburgh Gold Med Link opportunities Saturday Schools Work Experience International Exchange Programme

10. Academies All academies run alongside a normal academic programme. Basketball- mixed Football � mixed Golf � mixed Netball � girls only Must be realistic about own ability �very high standard expected - trials held or handicap based. Very demanding � students have to balance academic and sporting elements with limited time.

11. How to choose? Be realistic about your likely GCSE results particularly English and Maths grades. Look at career paths - check what qualifications you need (See careers staff today?) Interest and love of the subjects. CHECK CAREFULLY WHAT EACH SUBJECT INVOLVES - NO PRECONCEPTIONS Take advice from Teachers, Parents, Careers advisor and Mentors. Not because your friend is doing it!! Not because your Mum or Dad want you to do it- Parents take note!

12. Academic Subjects vs �Others� 6-7A/A* rest B�s � likely to apply for Oxbridge/Russell group do need 3 out of 4 �academic� subjects If not, choose subjects you love, are interested in and WANT to study. DO NOT choose subjects you are not really interested in.

13. Guidance Help from departments this afternoon- find out as much as you can. Take advice from subject teachers. Students will attend after school 6th form lessons through Jan and early Feb to gain further experience of the subject. Students will be guided by their Mentors over the next few months and should have dialogue with subject staff Absolute final decisions made when GCSE results are available and enrolment forms completed.

14. Subject changes New courses on offer � Performing Arts A� level and Fitness Instructors course. Discontinued Courses � Accounts, Music, Spanish and Travel & Tourism A� levels and all level 2 courses.

15. Applications Process Students will be issued with application forms in February after �extra lessons� have taken place Be aware of �clashes� problem (1 subject from each block) Please note- blocks may be subject to change. Make choices clearly. To be signed by mentor and HOY Application Forms to be handed in to Mr Brooks� Year 11 Office by Friday 10th February.

17. Applications Process All those who apply will be vetted by Mr Brooks, Mr Edwards and Heads of 6th Form. (Attendance, Punctuality, Behaviour record, Effort and Commitment to their studies) All students who apply will be sent a letter asking them in for interview. Some students may receive a letter refusing them a place. They will need to look elsewhere. All year 11 students will be interviewed by a member of SLT re their Post 16 options.

18. Provisional dates � subject to change Fri 10th Feb �Application forms due Thurs 23rd August � GCSE Results! Tues 28th August- 6th Form postal Enrolment Deadline Tuesday 11th Sept � Timetables collected Wednesday 12th September - Lessons start

19. At Barking Abbey: - Students will be well monitored with progress tracked. They will be well prepared for Higher Education applications or Employment. They will participate in a full Entitlement/ Enrichment programme. All 6th formers are welcomed into a caring, supportive and academically challenging Environment.

20. REMEMBER GCSE grades especially English Language and Maths are of great importance. Need a C grade in both to be able to access University Most A� Levels need a B grade in English Language Most BTEC courses need a C grade in both English and Maths
