  1. High School Registration • 2012-2013

  2. Partnership • Making registration and transition work is a shared responsibility - students and parents need to be aware and take ownership. • Panabaker staff (Mr. Tink, Mme Sherwin and Ms. Neisz) will provide information & documents, host presentations and notify students & parents regarding high school open-houses and information sessions • Adjustments to program and registration need to be carried out with the guidance department at the selected high school

  3. Schools and Programs • Dr. E P Scarlett High School – English, French Immersion Cert. and AP • Centennial High School – English and AP • Henry Wisewood High School – English, English IB, GATE and TLC • Western Canada High School - – English, French Immersion Cert. and French IB

  4. Credits & classes • High School Courses are assigned credits • Courses/modules can be worth 3 - 5 credits • Students require a minimum for 100 credits • Students must pass a course (50%) to earn the credits for that course. • Courses are numbered 10 - 20 - 30 level

  5. Grade 10 requirements • English, Social, Math, Science, PE, FLA (for immersion students) • Students may not have a ‘spare’ class in gd. 10 • Remainder of time table is balanced by option choices (which are extensive) • Fine Arts, Languages, CTS, Special Projects

  6. Grad. Requirements • 100 credits • English 30 or 33, and French 30 (immersion) • Social 30 or 33; Math 20, 23, 24; Science 20, 24 • Biology, Chemistry or Physics 20 • PE (10 credits) and CALM 20 • 10 credits in CTS, Fine Arts or other options • 10 credits at the 30 level (grade 12) in addition to English 30 or 33

  7. Specific programs • Advanced Placement (AP) - based on North American university placement track • Recognized by over 2900 post-secondary institutions • Can earn university credits in high school (not guaranteed and must be applied for) • Can do AP course by course • Must maintain 85% avg.

  8. International Baccalaureate • Designed around an International Standard for University admission • Offered in English at Henry Wisewood - French at Western Canada High School • Students can do partial IB program, but are encouraged to enroll in a full honors program • Requires an application - very demanding program - does not mean automatic admission as universities look at marks and other factors when they select • Application process begins in December. Students must have 85% avg and be committed to 3 - 4 hours homework per night - must be an enthusiastic, well-rounded student, good citizen who enjoys challenging learning • Requires a recommendation from teacher(s)

  9. Other programs • Fine Arts - focus on performance and/or visual arts • RAP - registered apprenticeships - can lead to a Journeyman certificate 18 months after grad • K & E - Knowledge & Employability Program - focus on graduation with a set of employment skills

  10. Term 1 & 2 - Important! • Students and parents need to know that high school registration is based on marks until the end of January/February. It is important that students focus on their achievement throughout the year as course selection can change based on increased or diminished performance.

  11. Registration req. • English & Social 10 - min. 60% • Math 10 C - min. 50% - further streaming in gd. 11 • Math 14 - 50% or below • Science 10 - 60% min. • Science 14 - 60% or below • FLA 10 plus - 60% or below in FLA • Advanced placement - 80% min. - IB - 85% min.

  12. Considerations • the cut-off grades are not flexible • course selection is based on PERFORMANCE not POTENTIAL • Alterations to program can be made at the high school in term 4. • We do not assist with registration to separate schools, private schools or out-of province schools or the National Sports School

  13. Timeline • November - IB information sent to Jr. Highs. Students who want to apply to IB must apply to their designated school • December/January - IB Applications due • November - January - High School open houses • February - completion of registration forms - due Feb. 16th to Mme Sherwin • March - forms to high schools after being checked for completion • March 15 - transfer deadline if requesting a non-designated school/program • April/May - course verifications printed and sent to students at Panabaker • May/June - students wishing to make changes must go to their chosen high school’s guidance department • August - high schools send out student time tables and information
