4. Registration… • Listen to the following information for classes you will need to take as a sophomore. • Meet with your counselor and set-up your classes for the 2014-2015 school year!

6. Graduation Requirements: Transcript Check • This checklist will be at the bottom of your transcript; the checklist is reviewed to make sure you are on track to complete all graduation requirements.

7. English • Students will need to sign up for either: • English 10 or • Honors English 10 • English 10 (regular and honors) will flex with Geometry.

8. Math • Students will need to sign up for either: • Geometry 0r • Honors Geometry • Geometry will flex with English 10/Honors English 10

9. Science • Students will need to sign up for: • Biology I or • Honors Biology I • Students may elect to take Chemistry, Biology II or another science, if he/she completed Biology I 9th grade year. • You must have 3 science classes to graduate. • Biology I, Chemistry/Physics, 1 additional science class.

10. Social Studies • Students will need to sign up for either: • U.S. Government or • AP U.S. Government/A.P. Economics

11. Wellness/PE Ind. Sport • Students will need to sign up for: • Wellness I (if not completed in 9th grade) • PE Individual Sport (9 weeks course) • This requirement may be met by participating in certain activities such as marching band, team sports, or flag and rifle... See your counselor.

12. JROTC: Satisfying Other Course Requirements • 2 credits of JROTC • Satisfies both the Lifetime Wellness and PE graduation requirements.   • 3 JROTC credits • Satisfy graduation requirements for Lifetime Wellness, PE, Personal Finance , and US Government • A student will need to take 3 additional credits of JROTC if they decide to use them for their program of study (Military/Exercise Science).  

13. Foreign Language • Students may take either: • French , Spanish, German or Honors German, Latin • Sophomores may sign up for foreign language courses. • It is not a guarantee that 10th graders will have foreign language on their schedule if requested. • It is recommended that students take both semesters in the same school year, if possible.

14. Fine Art • During high school, you are required to complete 1 Fine Art class. • Fine Art classes offered: • Band, Beginning Band • Theatre Arts I & II • Flag and Rifle • Visual Arts I, II, III, IV (Honors/Pre-AP ) & AP Visual Arts • AP Music Theory • Beginning Patriot Choir, Women’s Choir, Patriot Singers

15. Waiver Information • If you decide NOT to take the foreign language/fine art requirement, you MUST get the waiver signed by a parent/guardian and return it to your counselor. Students will not be allowed to waive this requirement if the form is not returned! • The waiver is located in the back of the JCHS Curriculum Guide. • Keep in mind: • If you choose to not take a foreign language/fine art, you must complete 3 additional elective enhancing classes. • Many colleges require foreign language and fine arts credits for admission; if you are college-bound, it is in your best interest to take these classes!!!

16. Programs of Study • You will need at least 3 classes in a Program of Study. • Elective Focus areas include: • CTE • Fine Arts • Academic Areas • If you are unsure about your Elective Focus area, speak to your counselor.

17. Advanced Placement (AP) Classes • The Advanced Placement (AP) Program consists of college-level courses and exams for high school students. AP courses make it possible for academically talented students to upgrade the quality and increase the challenge of their studies, both in high school and college. • AP enables students to receive college credit in particular subject areas upon satisfactory performance on the AP examination. • AP courses are offered contingent upon student enrollment requests. • Students have an opportunity to earn a GPA that exceeds 4.0 and stand out in the college/scholarship application process.

Classes Requiring an Application/Audition • The following classes require an application/audition: • Flag & Rifle • Patriot Harmony (Women’s Choir) • Patriot Singers • Band • Yearbook • Newspaper/Journalism • Leadership • Dual Enrollment • Must complete college application and DE grant application.

IMPORTANT REMINDER!!! • The classes you select during registration are important! • Make sure you are selecting classes you are POSITIVE you want. • Schedule changes are not guaranteed! • Schedules will NOT be changed for classes you sign-up for during registration! • Speak with your counselor to ensure you are selecting classes you will be the most successful in!

20. Thinking Ahead… • Sophomore Year College & Career Planning • Visit the school counseling office and explore college catalogs and other college materials including financial aid information. Visit eCampusTours.com to visit colleges online. • Re-evaluate your high school course selection to make sure it meets college requirements. • Take the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) and/or the PLAN (Preliminary ACT) in October to prepare you for college entrance exams. The PSAT may qualify you for certain scholarships. • See your counselor to take interest inventories to discover which career(s) might be a match for you. • If you plan to pursue athletics in college, check out NCAA requirements. *(Resource from Edsouth)*

TN Hope Scholarship Info • Students must meet the following requirements: • Entering freshmen must have a minimum of a 21 ACT (980 SAT), exclusive of the essay and optional subject area battery tests OR • Overall unweighted* minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) • Award amount – Up to $6,000 per year at an eligible four-year postsecondary institution or a two-year eligible postsecondary institution that offers on-campus housing.  Up to $3,000 per year at an eligible two-year postsecondary institution.  The award is divided equally between fall, spring and summer semesters.

High School Diplomas • GRADUATE WITH HONORS: • Students who score at or above all of the subject area readiness benchmarks on the ACT or equivalent score on the SAT will “graduate with honors.” ACT‘s College Readiness Benchmarks are English 18; Math 22; Science 23; Reading 22. • GRADUATE WITH DISTINCTION: • Students will be recognized as graduating “With Distinction” by attaining a “B” average and completing at least one of the following: • Earn a nationally recognized industry certification • Participate in at least one of the Governor’s Schools • Participate in one of the state’s All-State musical organizations • Be selected as a National Merit Finalist or Semi-Finalist • Attain a score of 31 or higher composite score on the ACT • Attain a score of 3 or higher on at least two advanced placement exams • Successfully complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program • Earn 12 or more semester hours of transcripted post-secondary credit.

High Honors/Honors/ Honor Roll • HIGH HONORS / HONORS: • Jefferson County High School recognizes all seniors who have attained a 4.1 or higher grade point average (GPA) as members of the high honors group. This group of high honor students will choose the graduation speakers within their own members. • JCHS also recognizes seniors who maintain a 3.7 to 4.0999 grade point average as honor students. Rank and GPA will be calculated upon completion of the seventh semester, utilizing the 5.0 GPA. • HONOR ROLL: • Scholarship is recognized and encouraged through an academic honor system. The honor system is an incentive for those whose average in each of his/her subjects is at least 85. Those students who achieve all grades of at least 85 will qualify for the “B” honor roll; those students who achieve all grades of at least 93 will qualify for the “A”” honor roll.
