Bobby (Fanny) Rosenfeld • Her first love was hockey, though she excelled at every sport • 1928 Canadian Olympic track-and-field team and a gold medal winner • Olympic gold in the 400-metre relay in world-record time • 1929, she was crippled with arthritis. However, 2 years later she came back to be the leading slugger in her women’s softball team • Only a year later, she became a respected sports journalist

Bobby’s affects on society • When Canadian women began making inroads athletically in the 1920s, newspapers in major centers began hiring ex-athletes as reporters • This resulted in more coverage of women’s sports than there would be in the next forty years • Despite female’s breakthrough, 87% of sport stories in that era were about male athletes • *interesting fact: Canadian women have always done better than men in international competition • *interesting fact 2:she was a lesbian. • 1949,named Canadian woman athlete of the half-century • One of the 5 greatest gold medalists on stamp

  5. Edmonton Grads • Basketball was still considered an exhibition at the Olympics during this era • The grads played 27 games in total, with a record of 27-0. They were the first undefeated Canadian women’s team at the Olympics. • outscore their opponents from other countries 1,863 to a mere 297(their opponents scored 1 for every 6 they scored) • Their coach, Page, said they were to be "Ladies first, basketball players second” • Sports gave women a place in society, not home
