VDA ACTIVITY REPORT ACTIVITY AT POLIMIandOPTICAL AMPLIFIER FOR ACCESS NETWORKSPoliMi - UPC S. TaccheoPOLITECNICO DI MILANO
ONU ONU ONU ONU OLT ONU ONU splitter ONU SOA+RSOA ONU ONU EDWA+RSOA Motivation • Optical Amplifier for Advanced Networks
Motivation Current “common” solution • Main limitation: Gain versus Bandwidth trade-off Measurement conditions: 20 ºC , 80 mA, 1550 nm Not possible to have an operation work point combining: - Optical gain in the range from 15 to 20 dB & - Electrical BW (-3dB) better than 1.5 GHz. Substitute: SOA with EDWA
Erbium Doped Waveguide Amplifiers • 12-15 dB Gain for 0 dBm input • Bi-directional operation with no penalty • Gain stabilisation can be provided by simple optical feedback • Custom samples can be optimised for the experiment. • AMOLF
Advanced EDWA • Gain stabilised EDWA • Any gain value available: from 5 to 20 dB gain and over.
Advanced EDWA • High-gain EDWA (prototype): up +15 dBm output 9 dB gain @ 1533 nm
Advanced EDWA • Bidirectional Operation • Bi-directional operation with no penalty • 2-Nodes ring network demonstrated • 2-Node Ring Network
Other Issues • Implementation of Burst transmission • Alternative: Ultra-compact EDFA (10-25 cm long) • We develop ultra-compact EDFA using highly Erbium-doped special fiber. • Perfomarce and footprint similar to EDWA • Possibly gain can scale up to 35-40 dB
Conclusions • EDWA offer advantages with respect SOA/LOA devices • Up to +15 dBm output power • Up to 25 dB gain (35 dB possible) • EDWA can substitute SOA and LOA • EDWA bidirectional operation is suitable for up- and down-stream • EDWA still offer potential integration and low cost mass productions • Applications • Use in access metro to improve performances (increase link budget) On-going collaborations • Bilateral mobility applications (PoliMi-UPC) within VD-A (approved) • Joint experiment submitted “Application of bi-directional EDWA in access network”, UPC-Polimi
