Innovation Rather than Invention? No-one disputes the “speed-up” • But, some writers argue that what we see now as change are simply refinements, in the sense that the big, transformative discoveries have been made. • One example—the phone. We can now communicate from anywhere to anywhere, but the invention of the telephone has already been made.
Other Examples • Coal Gasoline Nuclear Alternative Fuels… all basically allowing us to do the same thing?
And here… But, is it just Innovative? • DNA and Genetics is a fundamentally different approach to medicine based on a new understanding of how the body works. • It will allow us to do things previously impossible. • What about Quantum Physics? Doesn’t that offer the possibility of totally new reality? • It is the advancement of science, rather than technology which makes the difference between invention and innovation. Cloning is not a “Natural” Process and is a new science Quantum Physics and 10-dimensional space You are here
Does it make any difference? • The “innovation” school is basically arguing that we are out of the “fundamental” stage of discovery and, instead, into change for change sake—”fashion” “trend” “cuter” • They also place a lot of emphasis on the “fact” that most of these innovations are aimed at consumption, rather than need. • This is seen as a form of waste of the world’s resources since it does not solve any of the world’s fundamental problems. This is, however, arguable. But, it is true that we have moved from need to want. Here today and gone yesterday
So, what were the “Transformative Inventions?” • Basically, the machine, that released mankind from the limitations of human and animal labor. • This starts with the water-wheel and the windmill • Then explodes with the discovery of the steam engine, which transformed almost every aspect of life. • The telephone • Printing • The computer, which allowed calculations previously impossible. • Mostly, it is about ENERGY
