WHAT ARE COMMON THINGS MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELORS DO ? • Schedule changes • Individual counseling • Group counseling • Conflict resolution • Parent consult • Mediation • Master schedule • Testing
Schedule Pick Up 6th grade- August 12 • Last names A-K 8am-10am • Last names L-Z 10:15am-12:15pm 7th grade –August 13 9am-11am 8th grade- August 13 1pm-3pm You will get your locker at this time and you can tour the building during office hours everyday until school starts! NO stickers on lockers!
HOW DO I ASK FOR A SCHEDULE CHANGE ? • At schedule pick up in August there will be schedule change request forms to fill out for EMERGENCIES only (2 of the same class, missing class, etc…) • Please do not call or email- fill out the form • Elective change requests- same form, but only after we take care of the emergencies • We do not change a class because of a teacher
CAN WE CHANGE MY CHILD’S ELECTIVE CLASS ? • It depends upon available seats and the master schedule. • We will do everything possible to make it happen. • You must fill out a Schedule Change Request form
WHAT TIPS CAN YOU GIVE ME TO HELP MY CHILD BE SUCCESSFUL ? • Check teacher websites regularly for lesson plans/assignments • Check the Parent Portal for grades • Require that your child use the agenda for core classes daily. • Attend learning labs regularly (before and after school for 30 minutes) • Feel connected to school through activities • Know your child’s friends and what they are doing!
Internet Safety • If you allow your child to be a member of a social media site, require that you be their “friend” and/or know your child’s passwords and check their page frequently- not because you don’t trust them, because you are keeping them safe! • Remind your child to NEVER give out personal information • Set a limit on the amount of time your child spends on the computer • Talk to your child about internet predators .
Internet Safety continued…. • Keep computer in a family area of the house and install software monitoring devices • Tell your child to never respond to threatening or offensive messages and have them tell you immediately if they get such messages. • Do not let your child send photos or videos without your approval. • Consider drawing up a family contract regarding internet use. Computer use is a PRIVLEDGE!
WHAT DO I DO IF I BELIEVE MY CHILD IS BEING BULLIED OR HARRASSED ? • Contact a counselor or administrator immediately • We can’t help if we don’t know about it • Understand the difference between bullying and peer conflict • We will work with the victim to support them with strategies and skills • We will take appropriate disciplinary steps with the bully
THANKS FOR COMING We look forward to working with your family in a collaborative way to prepare them for high school
