Why So Many Chartstrings? • How you solicit may impact the chartstring. • What the donors states in writing may impact the chartstring. • The more restrictions you and the donor agree to, the more chartstrings you will have! • But too many restrictions means the transaction is no longer a gift. • To change a restriction, purpose or agreement, each and every donor must give written authorization.

  8. Grants vs. Gifts vs. Fund Raising • The words “gift” and “grant” and “fund raising” are used interchangeably by donors, grantors and faculty/staff, however, the nature of the transaction drives UVM accounting procedures (not the words).

  9. “I give to support A.P. Smith Research Fund in Asian Studies and I get intellectual property rights in return.” NOT A GIFT: IP rights makes this a grant; go to OSP. “My company gives to Asian Studies to support a lecture series and my company gets first rights to attend.” NOT A GIFT: Exclusive access makes this a contract; go to OSP. “I give to Asian Studies to support a scholarship if my daughter gets the scholarship.” NOT A GIFT: This is a tuition payment; go to SFS.
