  1. Section 3 : Human – Environment Interaction Jordan White Imani Travers

  2. Navigation charts • Hand bridges and small rafts and canoes were first used to reach the islands closest to the mainland • Pacific islanders relied on stars and charts made of sticks and shells for navigation • The sticks showed the patterns of waves and the shells

  3. Special Canoes • Pacific islanders developed voyaging canoes with double hulls • The two hulls made the craft stable and gave it the ability to carry lot of weight • Sails were used to take advantage of the winds • Cabins were built on the platform on top of the hills to shelter voyagers and their supplies • In lagoons outrigger canoes were used and they attached floats to them to help balance the canoe

  4. The rabbit problem • Thomas Austin released 24 rabbits into Australia and their population grew rapidly • Since they had a high population they wiped out native plants and destroyed crops • Reducing land ability to feed herds of sheep vegetation suffered erosion. • Other native animals became endangered because of competition for food

  5. Control measures • Australians imported forces to pray on rabbits but that didn’t work • The government built a 2000 mile fence to keep rabbits from spreading southwest • More than 90% of the rabbits died of that disease • They are working on combinations of methods like poison, new diseases, fences and destroying warrens and burrows

  6. Tests in bikini atoll • The U.S government chose bikini test because it lays away from shipping and air travel routes • The blast of the bomb contaminated the entire area with radiation they became injured or ill

  7. Long – term effects • The people moved to island of kili but were unhappy of the living conditions • The U.S government declared bikini atoll safe for humans some people moved back • Doctors found more radiation so people had to move again • No one knows when the island will ever be suitable for human life
