The Dark Side of the Internet Blue Mountain School District vs. J.S.
BMSD Principal’s MySpace Page…or was it? • A student at Blue Mountain Middle School created a MySpace.com Internet profile featuring her principal, James McGonigle • Site did not include McGonigle’sname, but pictures of him instead • Site contained profanity-laced statements insinuating that he was a sex addict and pedophile
Outcome • Student was suspended from school • U.S. appeals courts heard arguments on whether school officials can discipline students for making lewd, harassing, or juvenile internet postings from off-campus computers • In this case, the parent’s of the teacher were claiming that the suspension was violating the student’s first amendment speech rights considering this occurred from an outside computer. • RESULT: In this case, the court has ruled in the school’s favor, stating that the suspension of the student did not violate her First Amendment rights.
MY REACTION! In my opinion, this is completely ridiculous. A made up MySpace profile or any other website to ridicule another, let alone someone who is an authoritative figure in a school is inappropriate. This a form of harassment that needs to be dealt with in a serious manner. This constitutes as a substantial disruption of the environment of the school. There needs to be more laws to come into effect that will prevent sites like these to occur again.
