Problem • Identify the one liquid, one powder, and two metals that were found at crime scene N458. Metal #2 Powder “A” Liquid “A” Metal #1
Physical Properties • Physical properties are characteristics of matter that do not involve a chemical change. They are observable and measurable. They can be observed by the five senses. • By observing physical properties, you can observe certain qualities of objects such as an object’s densityor color.
Chemical Properties • Chemical properties are characteristics of objects that show how substances can react with other substances. It describes how matter can be changed into new matter with different properties. An example of a chemical property that objects can have is flammability.
Metal Evidence Evaluation Metal #2 Actual size -2cm Metal #1 actual Size- 4cm
Metal Evidence Evaluation • Identity of Metal 1: steel • Supporting evidence: • 2.35 grams • Magnetic • Density- 0.1 • Information from http://www.aperam.com/uploads/stainlesseurope/Brochures/Leaflet%20corrosion_Eng_374Ko.pdf • Key Properties- Density and Magnetic Ability
Metal Evidence Evaluation • Identity of Metal 2: Aluminum • Supporting evidence: • 1.75 grams (our sample) • Not magnetic • Density- 0.2 Metal 1 *Metals 1 and 2 were both placed an equal distance from the magnet- only Metal 1 was pulled towards the magnet. Metal 2 Information from http://webelements.com/ Key Information: Not Magnetic and density
Liquid Evidence Evaluation • Identity of Liquid A: Rubbing Alcohol • Supporting Evidence- • Flammable • Strong odor • Key Properties- Flammability and odor Identity of Liquid A Liquid A
Flammability Test- Liquids Water Vinegar Rubbing Alcohol Liquid A
Powder Evidence Evaluation • Identity of Powder A: Baking Powder • Supporting Evidence: • Responds to iodine • Bubbles in response to water and vinegar • Key Properties: Chemical Reactions
Summary of Findings • Metal 1: Steel Metal 2: Aluminum Actual Size: 4cm 2cm
Summary of Findings • Liquid A: Rubbing Alcohol
Summary of Findings • Powder A: Baking Powder
Summary of Findings • Compared to given substances and their properties we found the Identity of the Mystery Substances by observing physical and chemical properties.
