West Crime Scene Evidence Evaluation CSI Agents: Amelia Beebe Alyssa Borko Patrick Barry Jordan Anthony
Physical Properties • Observations or measurements with out changing the matter’s identity • Examples: • Ductility: the ability to pull a substance into a lasting wire • Malleability: the ability to roll or pound a substance into sheets • Solubility: the ability to dissolve a substance in another substance
Chemical Properties • Descriptions of matter based on the ability to change into new matter with differing properties • Examples: • Flammability: the ability of a substance to burn • Reactivity: the ability of two or more substances to combine and form one or more new substances
Metal Evidence Samples Sample 1 2.1 cm Sample 2 3.9 cm
MAGNETISIM SAMPLE 1 SAMPLE 2
Metal Evidence Evaluation Aluminum • Identification of Sample 1: • Support: • Magnetism: When tested Sample 1 showed no sign of magnetism. • Density: The density of metal one was 1.6 g per mL, which is less dense then Sample 2. (Just as aluminum is less dense than steel) • http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/metal-alloys-densities-d_50.html (shows that aluminum is less dense than steel in kg/mᶾ)
Metal Evidence Evaluation Steel • Identification of Sample 2: • Support: • Magnetism: When tested Sample 2 showed it was in fact magnetic. • Density: The density of Sample 2 was 2.3g, which is more dense than Sample 1. (Just as steel is more dense than aluminum) • http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/metal-alloys-densities-d_50.html (shows that steel is more dense than aluminum in kg/mᶾ)
LIQUID SAMPLE VINEGAR ALCOHOL WATER
MATCH LIQUID SAMPLE ALCOHOL
Liquid Evidence Evaluation Isopropyl Alcohol • Identification of Liquid Sample: • Support: • Flammability: When tested, the liquid sample caught fire and burned, just like the Isopropyl Alcohol. • Smell: When wafted, the liquid sample had a distinct smell identical to the Isopropyl Alcohol. http://www.chemicalkim.com/segments/take5_35.htm (proof and example that Isopropyl Alcohol is flammable)

Powder Evidence Evaluation Baking Powder • Identification of Sample A: • Support: (Reactivity with…) • Water (H₂0): When tested with water, Sample A fizzed. • Vinegar: When tested with vinegar, Sample A fizzed also giving off a bubbling sound. • Iodine: When tested with iodine, Sample A changed color to black. All tests matched the tests of the Baking Powder http://www.nowforthesciencebit.com/culinary-science/how-does-baking-powder-work (explains reaction of baking powder with liquids through baking)
Evidence Conclusion We conclude that… • The metals found at the crime scene was • Sample 1– Aluminum • Sample 2– Steel • The liquid found at the crime scene was • Liquid Sample– Isopropyl Alcohol • The powder found at the crime scene was • Powder Sample– Baking Powder
