  4. KEY STAGE 4 STUDY SKILLS INFORMATION EVENING What is needed to succeed at GCSE? • a personal aspirational target for each subject • at least 10 hours homework per week • be self motivated and well organised • make a positive contribution to school life • to have a good work/life balance

  5. KEY STAGE 4 STUDY SKILLS INFORMATION EVENING Personal organisation • be prepared for the day ahead • meet deadlines • exercise books and/or files are a revision tool and therefore need to be well organised and complete • be able to use a variety of research methods

  6. KEY STAGE 4 STUDY SKILLS INFORMATION EVENING Study Skills at Home • motivation and goal setting • effective note making • regular review and learning of work • reflection and personal target setting • organising your time effectively • knowing how to cope with stress

  7. KEY STAGE 4 STUDY SKILLS INFORMATION EVENING Regular review and learning of work • use a variety of learning techniques • do not just read notes • Mind Maps • Mnemonics • Make pod casts • Use Post-It notes

  10. LEARNING STYLES • What is a learning style? • Which style am I? • 3 main styles - Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic.

  12. Using your learning style • Your learning style is your strength. Go with it whenever you can. When in a class, try to use your learning style. • You will be taught using a variety of learning styles.

KEY STAGE 4 STUDY SKILLS INFORMATION EVENING Regular review and learning of work • Use a variety of learning styles and techniques • Do not just read notes • Mnemonics, mind maps, etc • Summarising e.g. index cards • Imaginative with personal challenges • Practice questions-this is key to many subjects. Attending lessons is NOT ENOUGH.

KEY STAGE 4 STUDY SKILLS INFORMATION EVENING • 2011 GCSE Results: • 84% of our students achieved at least 5 A*-C grades (85% in 2010, 71% in 2009, 66% in 2008) • This places us well in to the top 25% of schools nationally • 65% of our students achieved at least 5 A*-C grades, including English and Mathematics (67% in 2010, 66% in 2009, 50% in 2008) • Again, in the top 25% of schools nationally

KEY STAGE 4 STUDY SKILLS INFORMATION EVENING • Significant number of students attaining straight A* and A grades in all their subjects • We began our policy of inviting parents in to school at the start of Year 10 in September 2008 i.e. the cohort of students who achieved their GCSEs in 2009 • Since then results have steadily improved • Many other factors have helped: use of data, targeted support, personal mentoring, focus on Assessment for Learning
