Note Taking !!!!. The best part of history class. Purpose. Taking notes on a book helps students to focus on the content and to remember it. Notes should be easier to re-read than the book itself, as they will be shorter and in a familiar style. Good practice for lecture style note taking.

  2. Purpose • Taking notes on a book helps students to focus on the content and to remember it. • Notes should be easier to re-read than the book itself, as they will be shorter and in a familiar style. • Good practice for lecture style note taking.

  3. Format • You always need the date, chapter and lesson, vocab list, and section titles. • Lets look at the model I have provided for you • WE ARE NOT AUTHORS – DO NOT RE-WRITE THE TEXTBOOK!!!

  4. Abbreviate. Abbr. Ab. Abbreviating saves time • & • @ • / • = • w/ • Etc. • b/4 • b/c • Diff • Gov’t • Yr. • AND • AT • PER • EQUAL • WITH • ET CETERA • BEFORE • BECAUSE • DIFFERENCE • Government • Year

  7. A few more note taking tips for you: • If you are in a hurry, leave out a, an, or the • Always use 1, 2, 3,...instead of one, two three. • Abbreviate any word by leaving out the vowels.

  8. Method • First: read a paragraph in your textbook Do not take notes, but rather focus on understanding the material.  • It is tempting to take notes as you are reading the first time, but this is not an efficient technique:  you are likely to take down too much information and simply copy without understanding. • Second:  Review the material • Locate the main ideas, as well as important sub-points • Set the book aside • Paraphrase this information:  Putting the textbook information in your own words forces you to become actively involved with the material • Third:  write the paraphrased ideas as your notes • Do not copy information directly from the textbook • Add only enough detail to understand
