Role of the Internet in the future of Puerto Rico according to IBM June 6, 2008 Ing. Alberto S. Rodriguez
IBM’s Next 5 in 5Five Innovations that Could Change our Lives in the Next Five Years in Puerto Rico
IBM’s Next 5 in 5 • We will Have Remote Access to Healthcare * • There will be a 3-D Internet * • Computer Technology will Help Solve Environmental Issues • Cell Phones will Read our Minds * • Speech Translation will be Real-time *
Emerging need for remote healthcare access • A 2006 Census Bureau report shows that people are migrating out of major cities • The report shows that a significant number are moving into counties 40 or more miles away from major cities. • A significant percentage of developing world populations have virtually no access to meaningful healthcare, especially due to lack of transportation.
Benefits of Remote Healthcare • Imagine if a doctor could monitor a patient’s health remotely • A patient could take her blood pressure at home and then an authorized care provider could securely access the results through a cell phone (Electronic Medical Records). • IBM and its partners are working on remote healthcare technologies.
BT • Monitoring device collects patient data • Data is sent to mobile hub via Bluetooth • Data is automatically sent to server but can also be inspected on hub • Data is processed on server and inspected by physician • Regime is determined by physician based on medical data analysis In the Works: Remote Patient Monitoring with IBM Personal Care Connect Server Data Patient Diary • Custom Features can be built such as entering data into a patient diary on the hub
Anatomic and Symbolic Mapper Engine, or ASME • IBM’s visualization software (called the Anatomic and Symbolic Mapper Engine, or ASME) would allow this doctor to click on the knee of a virtual human body and instantly see all the available medical history and information related to that patient’s knee, including text entries, lab results and medical images, such as MRIs.
There Will be a 3-D Internet
Virtual Worlds – highly visual, immersive environments … … not just games, user generated worlds with social aspects already showing promise for business …
Imagine the Internet with highly immersive, visual components… • 3-D online spaces where your “avatar” can walk around in a real life setting • Build virtual buildings and machines, socialize and exchange ideas with others – even do business • Soon, different 3-D worlds will connect like Web sites
Early Adopters – Commerce • Improve customer service and satisfaction with 3D help • Simulate entertainment experiences • Custom design tools in a 3D, immersive environment • Preview how products will look in your home
Implications and Opportunities • Transforming Customer Experiences • Improving Business Process (i.e. supply chain, manufacturing, HR) • Commerce and Transactions • 3D Modeling and Simulations • Real World and Virtual World Connections • Building out the 3D Net …applications nobody has imagined yet
Emerging Business and Societal Applications • Medical or other training using virtual world technology • Rehearsal and role playing • Simulations and response • 3D models, immersive environments recreate real life and simplify the complex
Need for New Water Filtration Technologies • The World Bank reports that 80 countries now have water shortages that threaten health and economies while 40 percent of the world — more than 2 billion people — have no access to clean water or sanitation.
Imagine Computing Technologies Helping Address Environmental Issues Early 2007 New IBM research effort focused on environment Apply advanced computing technologies to emerging environmental opportunities, such as water filtration via nanotechnology and efficient solar power systems.
Cell Phones Will Read Our Minds
Cell Phones Will Read Our Minds Advanced “presence” technology will give handheld devices the ability to automatically learn about your preferences and know where you are. Presence technology could direct you to the closest branch of your bank, or even recommend a nearby restaurant you’d like.
Cellular phones as pervasive device • Micro payments • Relative finder / fencing • Banking Transactions
Real-time Speech Translation Will Help Eliminate Language Barriers
Real-time Speech Translation Technology Eliminating Language Barriers • Imagine instantly being able “speak” or understand another language anywhere in the world, through use of a handheld, a laptop, or just by picking up the telephone and asking for real-time translation services • Translation technologies embedded into handheld devices, home phones, cars, and more. • Implications for emergency medical teams, travelers, business, governments.
Text translation Speech Recognition Machine Translation Speech Synthesis IBM Real-time Speech Translation Technologies Today, IBM speech innovations are allowing media companies to monitor Chinese and Arabic news broadcasts over the Web in English, travelers to use PDAs to translate menus in Japanese, and doctors to communicate with patients in Spanish. • IBM MASTOR - Multilingual Automatic Speech-to-Speech TranslatOR • MIT Technology Review - One of “10 Emerging Technologies That Will Change Your World” • Time Magazine - One of ”5 New Things that Will Blow your Mind”

Merging of Technologies • Under your skin: IBM research unveils 3D avatar to help doctors visualize patient records and improve care.
Good Samaritan • Technologies integration: • Electronic Medical Records, GPS cellular location awareness, SMS, Internet access • IBM Research is showcasing a new mobile phone technology that combines Presence 2.0 technology with integrated medical health records—guiding potential "Good Samaritans" and emergency medical professionals with information on how to aid people in critical medical situations. This combination of IBM Research capabilities and IBM WebSphere Presence Server exemplifies IBM’s ability to create enhanced mobile applications for everyday life.
Other Internet enabled Technologies • Video Surveillance • Analytics to mechanize analysis of the video • Suspicious packages left • Violations of restricted zones • Gun shot detection and location • Video VoIP / Telepresence The City of Chicago's OEMC and IBM Launch Advanced Video Surveillance System IBM and Key Business Partners Incorporate Industry's Most Advanced Security Capabilities Into City's "Operation Virtual Shield" Project
In Puerto Rico… • These advances will provide the advantages of: • Be able to export services cheaper and to greater parts of the world • Virtual stores • Selling to countries with different languages • Diminish need for talent to need to leave Puerto Rico to be part of world class markets • Professional development • Quality of life • In short, a tool for economic development
Enablers • In order to fulfill the promises of the Internet in Puerto Rico: • Need to have increasing bandwidth and robust / resilient networks in order to fully utilize these new technologies • Telepresence • Security and Privacy will be of paramount importance, in order to build confidence on the systems • HIPAA • Identity Protection • Laws will need to keep pace with technologies, eg: • E-Rx • Medical practice across borders • Laws against 3-D Virtual world crime
Organizations like Internet Society of Puerto Rico need to keep spreading the gospel to make these promises a reality, and ensure these advances are used in a responsible way, without creating a digital inequality system…
