John 12:20-33 Before we can begin to analyze a text we first become familiar with the text Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. 3. "Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say-- `Father, save me from this hour'? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name." John 12:20-33 - continued Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

John 12:20-33 Greeks? or Greek-speaking Jews?  Hellen– A Greek: Someone from the Greek language and culture; (NT) Gentile, pagan, or heathen (BAG 251) Hellenistes– A Hellenist: A Greek-speaking Jew in contrast to one speaking a Semitic language (BAG 251) Acts 6 1 Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews (the Aramaic-speaking Jews) by the Hellenists (the Greek-speaking Jews), because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. John 12:20-33 John puts the cleansing of the temple in chapter 2 because his Gospel is a theological claim rather than a chronological account. Is there any historic relationship between Jn 12.20 and the Messianic entry? Is there any historic relationship between Jn 12.20 and the cleansing of the temple? That isn’t John’s story… but does that help you understand the back-story in John’s story? Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. Why would Philip have a Greek name? Might it have to do with his home community? Is there any relationship between his name, his community, and his profession, that might lead Greeks to him? Is it possible they knew him or know of him?

You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming….” What’s changed???? Why does Jesus suddenly say, THE HOUR HAS COME?? John 8.20 These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one laid hands on Him, for His hour had not yet come. John 7.30 Therefore they sought to take Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.

They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. … Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. … Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." John 12:20-33 If the Greeks are coming to Jesus… then the hour has come to draw all people… by being lifted up.

Is this a non-sequitor?

19. John 12:20-33 - continued So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived. – Numbers 21.9 The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life -- John 3.14-15 For John, would “kind of death” refer to cause or effect?
