  3. IS THE PREVENTATION OF INHERITED BLINDNESS POSSIBLE? Retinitis Pigmentosa Fighting Blindness (RPFB) says YES! Retinitis Pigmentosa is a major cause of blindness in young people worldwide The genetic faults cause irreparable retinal damage and eventual total sight loss

  4. HOW EXTENSIVE IS RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA? 25, 000 sufferers in UK 2 – 3 million sufferers worldwide BUT !!! These figures are conservative because, RP being a progressive condition, Many people are recorded later in life.

  5. Extensive Research has led to a BREAKTHROUGH It is now possible to replace the defective Gene Bad News – Good News Bad – Unlikely to help existing sufferers restore their sight Good – For young people: early diagnosis + planned gene therapy treatment will help prevent further sight loss

  6. WHAT STAGE IS THE RESEARCH AT? Animal Trials have been SUCCESSFUL The next stage is CLINICAL TRIALS ON HUMAN VOLUNTEERS ‘This is a complex and expensive process’

  7. Funding progress to date RPFB has raised millions to get to this exciting stage ..... However ..... RPFB has committed £750,000 to raise over 5 years That is £150,000 per year This is where our Project begins

The Importance of the Work “From the bench to the bedside”Essential to translate the science into genuine treatments for patients losing their sight Gene Therapy in young people offers the prospect of preservation of sight for many years The charity investing this money helps researchers attract £millions from statutory funding

  9. WHY BECOME INVOLVED?? By saving someone’s sight you give that person:- The ability to live a normal life Freedom from dependency on others Reduce their reliance on the state plus It Meets Our FOUNDATION’S OBJECTIVE “To Do Good In The world”

FUNDA VOLUNTEER • Travel and subsistence costs of:- • We (gu)estimate £1,800 • This year CB is committing £1,000} • Ralph has raised £500} = £1,800 • With 20%District Grant £300} ------------------------------------------------ • CB can fund 1 Volunteer • We invite 1020 Clubs to help us FUNDANOTHER.
