Avoiding Plagiarism Angie Chandler and Hennie Yip
Common Mistakes • Working too closely with a friend • Missing references • Unacknowledged quotes • Poor paraphrasing
Working with friends • Do no more than discuss the work before you start!! • Once you are writing (including taking notes) you need to work independently or your work will be too similar.
Missing References • If you didn’t think of it • And it’s not common knowledge • EVEN if it’s only paraphrased • It needs a reference
About Quotes • If you take any text from a source without paraphrasing, it must be marked as a quote • It must also be referenced • Quote marks or indentation (dept dependent)
Paraphrasing • To paraphrase, distance yourself • Don’t write whilst looking at the original text! • Take broad notes, then write independently.
A Few Examples… • What your tutor/lecturer might see • What would you consider to be plagiarised? • And why?
