Methods I/T/U Patient coverage • Influenza vaccine coverage report collected from I/T/U facilities for vaccine administered between August 1 - March 31st, 2011 • Includes all patients with at least 2 visits in the last 3 years • High risk – patients - at least 2 visits with an ICD-9 diagnosis code for high risk medical condition* (e.g. diabetes, heart disease) I/T/U Healthcare Personnel (HCP) Coverage • Defined as all personnel working in an I/T/U facility • Data collected from I/T/U facilities on HCP influenza vaccination, refusals, and contraindications documented between August 1st – March 31st, 2011 * As defined by ACIP

  3. Methods , Cont. U.S. Estimates • Based on data available in CDC’s FluVaxView • Data sources: • National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) • Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) • National Immunization Survey (NIS) • Internet Panel Surveys

  4. Results - I/T/U Coverage among patients • Data collected from 11 of the 12 IHS Areas • 194 I/T/U facilities • 869,994 patients (58% of IHS User population) • Overall influenza vaccine coverage (all ages): 35% • Range between IHS Areas, 19% - 47%

Results – Coverage among HCP • Data were collected from all 12 IHS Areas • 189 I/T/U facilities • 29, 135 HCP (~ 77% of total HCP) • Overall HCP coverage for all facility types: 72.4% • Area Range: 61% - 84% • Coverage varied by facility type • IHS facilities: 77.4% • Tribal facilities: 69.0% • Urban Indian facilities: 52.6%

Summary • Coverage among AI/AN patients seen in I/T/U facilities is lower than overall U.S. Estimates • Difference in methodology may account for some difference • Variation between IHS Areas • Low coverage among 65+ age group a concern • Coverage among I/T/U HCP is better than U.S. Estimates • Coverage has remained level for last 3 years • New strategies needed to increase?
