  2. Star Power • The film Notting Hill had a budget of $42m • $13.5m was paid to Julia Roberts to star in the movie • That represents nearly 1/3 (32%) of the total budget going on one actor • Why did the production team decide to do this?

Julia Roberts • Julia Roberts starred in Pretty Woman in 1991. • She was paid $300,000 for her role • She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for this film (and had been the year before for Steel Magnolias) • The film – a romantic comedy – went on to earn $464m worldwide • Just 8 of her films (including Notting Hill) have made a total of $2.4bn worldwide… • …that’s just over 10 times the budget of Avatar

Julia Roberts • She has been voted in People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" eleven times • From 2002-2006 she topped the Hollywood Reporter’s highest earning female star list. • She is a household name and a respected actress having finally won the Oscar for Best Actress in 2001 for Erin Brokovich

Reasons for her success • She is a very talented actress – the Oscar nominations & the win prove this • In Steel Magnolias (1990), Roberts plays Shelby Latcherie – a young diabetic facing the prospect of life unable to have children • In Pretty Woman (1991), Roberts plays a prostitute • Roles in Sleeping with the Enemy and Dying Young (both 1991) also won her the respect of female fans for tackling some characters with very female-orientated problems • Her appearance and inclusion in People Magazine’s Top 50 Most Beautiful Women mean she is clearly a hit with the men as well… • The question seems to be: why not cast her in Notting Hill?

  6. Star Vehicle • A star vehicle is a production that seeks (in addition to making money) to enhance the career of a star. It also refers to a production that has been written with a particular star in mind • Notting Hill was a star vehicle for Julia Roberts: • Roberts was the "one and only" choice for the role, although Roger Michell and Duncan Kenworthy did not expect her to accept. • Her agent told her it was "the best romantic comedy she had ever read". • Roberts said that after reading the script she decided she was "going to have to do this".

Institutional Framework (US) • Based on the 2007 figures, 6 companies controlled the following shares in the US/Canadian movie markets: • 20th Century Fox [Newscorp] = 11.9% • Universal Studios [NBC Universal] = 12.2% • Colombia Pictures [Sony] = 12.9% • Disney = 15.3% • Paramount [Viacom] = 15.5% • Warner Brothers [Time Warner] = 19.7% • If you want to get a film released in the US, you need to do a deal with one of these companies... 87.5%

  8. Working Title was set up in London in 1983 • It has produced films like Bridget Jones, Notting Hill and even Green Zone • In 2000, a controlling share was sold to Universal Studios • What might be the mutual benefits for each company in such a deal?

Benefits Working Title • Guaranteed distribution channel to major US & International markets • Lines of funding open • Able to attract big budget stars (like Julia Roberts) Universal • Guaranteed flow of quality movies from reputable source • Very little financial risk • A foothold in British markets = more revenue
