Why change the healthcare system that we’ve got? • It’s too expensive. Insurance rates have increased 73% since 2000. • It’s wasteful. 30 cents of every healthcare dollar goes towards paperwork, not actual care. • We are not as healthy as we could be. We spend more than any other country, as total amount and percent of GDP, yet we lag behind with regard to health parameters.
37th in the world • At present, the United States falls far short of many industrialized nations, as well as some 3rd world nations, with regard to infant mortality, life expectancy, preventative care, physician to patient ratio, hospital length of stay, and a host of other parameters. • We are paying more for our healthcare than any other country and getting far less. • With Single Payer, everyone contributes and everyone gets Healthcare.
Our health care system is broken… but we can fix it. • We remove the insurance industry from the equation. • Everyone is covered. • You go to any doctor, with no copays, deductibles, or premiums. • All healthcare services are covered.
HR 676 • National bill • Only single player bill • All bills paid through a pool, similar to Medicare • Improved Medicare for all • Open choice of hospitals, doctors, labs, etc.
We Have A Health Crisis in Pennsylvania • 900,000 - 1.3 million uninsured • More Hospital Closures • Inadequate SCHIP funding • Impending retiree health benefit crisis • Inadequate funding of public health workforce
How will improved Medicare for all work? • Every person will have a state or national Health Insurance card. Just present that card to receive care. • Funding will be through a combination of payroll taxes, taxes already being paid, other tax sources, such as cigarette, tobacco, etc. Given the environment today, 95% of people will pay less than they are paying now.
What can I do to help get Single Payer Healthcare? • Tell everyone about Single Payer. • Invite a speaker to your organization, or join one. • Circulate a petition • Support HR 676 and SB/HB 300 • Write a “letter to the editor.” • Tell your legislators that you want ACTION on a single payer solution. • Vote for candidates who support Single Payer. • Talk to your patients and peers. • Educate as frequently as you can • Educate yourself.
