  5. Homepage Guidelines • Make the site’s purpose clear • Plan a layout of the page with the end user in mind • Use a template to be consistent with elements on all pages • Make sure all links work • Give email link back to you

  6. Homepage Guidelines (cont.) • Balance text and graphics and use ample white space • Keep homepage short to eliminate scrolling • Link all pages back to the homepage

  7. Web Design Mistakes • Scrolling marquees & numerous animations …this is distracting to the user • Complex URLs …lends itself to typos • Long, scrolling pages …all critical content and navigation options should be at the top

  8. Mistakes (cont.) • Non-standard link colors …be consistent, standard colors are blue and purple • Overly, long download times …limit animations and sounds…users lose interest after 10 seconds • Useless graphics …don’t over-decorate
