Generating buy-in and ownership by a new community **** Or **** Achieving Faculty Buy-in to a Paradigm shift Facilitators: Marvin Pitts - WSU Dan Cordon – U of I
Content • First meeting of a multi-session project • Identifying sources of Resistance • Identifying roadblocks • Removing roadblocks • Obtaining a positive outcome for each participant
Identifying Sources of Resistance • Outcomes • Ability to identify sources of resistance within a group • Ability to design a scheme for ranking the severity of various Sources of Resistance to a Paradigm Shift
Generating Ideas via Fishbowl • Center Table – The Fish • Will get to roll play as characters in a changing paradigm (no-doubt you’ve been frustrated by them in your own meetings) • Ignore others outside the table for allotted time • Other Tables – The Observers • Collecting/Recording root issues hindering change displayed by the Fish • Free to move, but do not interact/disrupt what’s happening in the Fishbowl
Scenario A large lower division course is taught in six sessions by a range of instructors. Many of the instructors have taught the course before, some are teaching it for the first time. For many the years the course has been taught using a common set of course objectives, but each instructor determined how their section was taught. Last semester the Associate Dean attended a PCrest workshop on self assessment, and decided that the instructors for this course will self assess their performance, and share these assessments weekly with the other instructors as a means of improving performance. Developing before us is the meeting where the instructors learn they will be self assessing this semester.

Fear (4) Lack of training (3) Ultimate use (2) Time constraints (6) No perceived value (4) Alignment of expectations (6) Incomplete guidance (2) Lack of strong vision (3) Egos Networks of relationships rather than team(1) Sources • No team work (1) • No common goals • Power issues
Second Activity • 15 minutes to discuss and create a 1.5 minute oral report • Form small groups of 6 to 8 • As a group, develop a scheme for ranking the severity of the identified sources for use in future sessions • Top-Ranking Sources • Time constraints • Alignment of expectations • Fear • Perceived value • Lack of training • Lack of vision
Schemes • Poll (3x5 cards) • Numerical model – percentage, etc • Stakeholders • Resources • Reading literature for other schemes • Gap analysis
