HIV Funding • In the early years that follow the discovery of HIV: • ARV treatment is too expensive and not sustainable in developing worlds • Focus on prevention • Bold advocacy effort. As a consequence: • The price of ARVs decreased drastically • The hope to access life saving drugs was created for millions of people in the South
HIV Funding (2) • Then new Funding mechanisms were created: • MAP (WB) • The Global Fund • PEPFAR • An unprecedented amount of funding was mobilized to fight AIDS, even if there was still a gap • Millions of people were put in ARV treatment, even if millions are still on waiting list • We have never been so close to our ultimate objective to end AIDS
HIV Funding (3) • 2008, the world faced to an economic and financial crisis • Because of those crisis most of the donors cut their contribution to the fight against AIDS • Gains realized the past decades are now in jeopardy • Again, Advocates from around the world engaged in advocacy effort to protect the gains and to explore for additional sources of funding
