Introduction to Ocean • Gave students time to navigate the MBARI website and investigate current research projects being worked on. • Gave students introductory questions guiding them to the necessary information to perform case study • What is an upwelling • What is El Nino • How are they related • Describe the ideal habitat that a sardine would thrive • Why does any of this matter to residents of Kansas

  4. Case Study • Groups of 2 (each with computer) • Very little verbal direction • Notes describing thoughts throughout the activity • Discussion Questions

  5. Activity Wrap-up • Designed questions to assess and have students reflect on activity • What season did the upwelling occur? • What data leads you to this conclusion?

  6. Strengths of Activity • Exciting for students • Includes cross-curricular aspects (geography, technology, math, etc…) • Requires out-of-the-box thinking • Uses “Real” scientific data • Well laid out • Forces students to use valuable science skills • Easily modifiable
