  2. After 2nd World War: • Cooperation was needed to rebuild Europe • Th US gave Europe money for this: • Marshall Plan. • Council of Europe was formed in 1949. • Members were: The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, France, UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. • It’s no part of EU!

  3. Members present day:

  4. 1950 • Plans are made for a united Europe. • More cooperation needed to prevent war: • Unite the coal and steel industries: • European Coal and Steel Community

  5. Members:

  6. 1957 • European Coaland Steel community was a success, sotheywanted more cooperation. • More economic cooperation. • 25th March 1957: Treaty of Rome was signed: • Economicunityand “4 freedoms” between the countries: • Free movement of goods, people, services andcapital.

  7. 1957 • From that moment on the group of countries was called: • The Eurepean Economic Community (EEC) • Started with 6 members, now 27. • (most became a member after 1970’s)

  8. More goals • At first: only goal was coal and steel. • Later they also had other goals: • Travelling, safety, one currency, less taxes.

  9. Decision making • At first: all members had to agree to make a decision. • Called: unanimous • This made decision making were longwinded and slow. • Later: 2/3 majority was enough.

  10. New members • Many new countries applied to become a member. • UK, Ireland and Denmark in 1961 • Were turned down. • Re-applied in 1967 with Norway. • After years some were allowed to become a member.

  12. 1993 • New name: • European Union • And made plans for one currency: Euro.
