Conference Overview • CA-NV Spring Conference involved several professional and educational AWWA members who spoke on issues with water resources and how to be more sustainable in our water utilities facilities. • Technical Seminars • Onsite Tours • River Mountain Water Treatment Facility • Hoover Dam • Student Chapter Meeting

  3. Technical Seminars • Topics included: • Distribution System Water Quality • Water Treatment/Research • Safe Drinking Water Act • Engineering and Construction • Water Management and Efficiency • Water Well Technology • Reservoirs and Structures Maintenance

  4. River Mountain Water Treatment Facility • Southern Nevada Water System (SNWS): • Consists of Alfred Merritt Smith and River Mountain water treatment facilities. • River Mountain treatment facilities is able to treat up to 600 million gallons of water a day.

  5. River Mountain Water Treatment Facility • Tour involved learning about the features at the River Mountain Water Treatment Facility: • Wastewater is treated with ozone and sodium hyprochlorite. • Multistage filtration system is used in the facility to remove particles from the water.

River Mountain Water Treatment: Central Control Room • Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system is used to operate and monitor the treatment and delivery. • Production operators control pumps at various pump stations. • SCADA used to monitor flows, tank levels, system pressures, chlorine residuals and other properties.

  9. River Mountain Water Treatment: Laboratory • Technicians and scientists collect and analyze water samples from throughout the valley. • Samples are collected from treatment facilities and distribution systems.

  10. Field Trip: Hoover Dam • Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge: opened recently in October 2010 to the public.

  11. Hoover Dam • Hoover Dam Features: • Structural Height: 726 feet • Hydraulic Height: 576 feet • Number of Turbines: 17 • Max Power Turbine Discharge: 48k cfs

Student Chapter Meeting With AWWA Professional Representatives • Purpose of meeting: to discuss our chapter’s goals and how increase correspondence to the AWWA professional group. • Participates: establishing student chapters (UCD and SJSU), two other interested student chapters, and 5 AWWA representatives (from Davis, Bay Area, and Southern California). • Topics: our outline, student projects, and career opportunities.
