  4. Large Differences Everywhere Access and use varies widely everywhere • Access to computers: schools, teachers, homes • Access to the Internet: speed, cost, location • Psychological access: Wide individual differences

  5. Cost of Technology Continues to DecreaseUnlike Almost Everything Else in Education • Technology is expensive…but.. • Cost/Benefit ratio continues to improve • M.I.T. project on $100 laptop • http://laptop.media.mit.edu/

Developing Technology in K-12 Takes Time,Start Growing Where the Ground is Fertile • Nurture “social capital” around technology wherever you find it. • Your students are an essential resource • For your learning as faculty • For your schools and society • Use the energy of the “technologically passionate”: Students, faculty, families. • Encourage access outside schools.

Think About Virtual Learning for Everyone • Not just universities… • K-12 Teachers, K-12 Students • Online learning is essential because • Rate of change in knowledge • Need to reach learners everywhere • Economies of scale • Scarcity of highly qualified teachers • “Lifelong Learning” is necessary • Future of education is via the Web
