History • The teams first played in 1897. • With this first meeting, the rivalry became the most heated rivalry played in college football. • The overall record for the rivalry stands in favor of Michigan with 58 wins, Ohio State 48, and 6 ties between the two teams.
November 1969 • The game was a turning point for the rivalry when the #12 ranked Wolverines beat the #1 ranked Buckeyes. • With the winner of this game being named the winner of the Big 10 Conference, the “10 year war” was started between Ohio State’s coach, Woody Hayes, and Michigan’s coach, Bo Schembechler.
November 1969 • With Ohio State beating Michigan the previous year 50-12, Coach Schembechler required the Wolverines to practice the week before in jerseys which had number 50 printed on them. • This ultimately served as motivation for the Wolverines, as they defeated the Buckeyes 20-14.
November 2006 • Game pitted teams against each other, as the #1 ranked Buckeyes played the #2 ranked Wolverines. • This was a first for the rivalry. • Buckeyes defeated the Wolverines 42-39.
