  1. RFID, Supply Chain & ERP • Radio Frequency Identification • a method used to identify, store, and remotely retrieve data using radio waves. • Data is stored on tags that are attached to materials or merchandise and can be scanned. • Tags transmit data via radio waves to a database. • Tags contain information such as product type, quantity, or suggested price.

  2. Major Retailer Wal-Mart • Required suppliers to apply RFID tags to all shipping containers, whether individual boxes or pallets, shipped to its warehouse facilities. • This would allow all relevant information to be transferred into Wal-Mart’s inventory database while it passed through the doors of the warehouse.

  3. Supplier: Haier • Wanted solution that would • be cost-effective • integrate with its ERP software • be expandable

  4. Solution: outsource to VAI* • Designed integrated modification to existing ERP software • Program uses identification markers in “ship-to” files to identify when order requires RFIP tag • Tag automatically printed • User queried box or pallet

  5. Additional Benefits • Increased coordination and higher level of efficiency among Haier’s distribution facilities and Wal-Mart • Easy to add additional retail customers’ RFID requirements • Can use RFID internally
