Near: Geography • The South Central region of present-day Mexico was the house of the Aztecs • Mountains and volcanoes kept people apart • Using the large amounts of water, fishing was the main source of food
Downfall of the Aztecs • In 1521, Hernan Cortes of Spain defeated the Aztecs and the emperor Montezuma, who was killed by invaders • The armies of Tenochtitlan were defeated on August 13, 1521 • Cuauhtemoc, the last Aztec emperor, surrendered to complete the downfall
