  2. Political • Acamapichtli was the first Aztec ruler • The Aztecs conquered many people, which led to increased wealth • Conquered people were forced to pay respect to the Aztec Government

  3. Economic • Agriculture was the main economic system • Cocoa Beans were used as money • Merchants traded strictly within Aztec Borders

  4. Polytheistic Gods were used to explain natural events Human Sacrifice was a major part of Aztec Religion Religious

  5. Noble Priests Paid Warriors Craftsmen & Merchants Plain Soldiers Common Farmers Slaves Social • Extended families were a major part of Aztec life • These families farmed, but did not own the land

  6. Intellectual: Arts • Girls & Boys went to separate schools • While there was no written language, scribes made pictograms to communicate • Dances were related to religion and used many different instruments

  7. Near: Geography • The South Central region of present-day Mexico was the house of the Aztecs • Mountains and volcanoes kept people apart • Using the large amounts of water, fishing was the main source of food

  8. Downfall of the Aztecs • In 1521, Hernan Cortes of Spain defeated the Aztecs and the emperor Montezuma, who was killed by invaders • The armies of Tenochtitlan were defeated on August 13, 1521 • Cuauhtemoc, the last Aztec emperor, surrendered to complete the downfall
