Van Gogh Facts and Numbers: • Born 1853, Died 1890 • He only sold one painting during his lifetime; his brother Theo bought it. • Sadly, he killed himself at the age of 37 • He painted many different subjects but 5 distinct categories are evident in his work: Landscapes, Architecture, Still Lifes, Portraiture & Figures • His total body of work exceeded 2,000; over 900 paintings and over 1,000 drawings
Life & Artistic Evolution • In his early life, he wanted to be a church pastor, but he quickly discovered his passion for art and painting. • Though there has been speculation about the extend of Van Gogh’s illness, he was undoubtedly troubled mentally and often physically too. • He spent several years at a mental institution. • His early work was different in that his color palette was darker and more muted, and his brushstroke less noticeable. • That all changed when he met artists of the French Impressionism movement.
Van Gogh was Dutch but he spent much of his career in Paris,France.
