C.C.C. 127-141 How does the bible relate to our moral development and personhood? • We read the Old Testament in light of Christ crucified and risen. • The study of the Scriptures is the soul of sacred theology – the bible is the Word of God • The 46 OT and 27 NT books nourish and govern the whole Christian life. OT prepares for the NT; the NT fulfills the OT.
C.C.C. 142-174 How is our humanity and personhood connected to faith? • By faith we completely submit our intellect and will to God. • Faith is a grace and a human act – human intellect and will cooperate with divine grace. • Humankind’s response to God by faith must be free – we are not forced to accept faith against our will. • Faith is necessary for salvation.
C.C.C. 1700-1715 What does it mean to be made in the image of God? • Humans are endowed with a spiritual and immortal soul. • By reason we can understand the order of creation by the Creator; by our free will we can direct ourselves toward the good. • The true freedom given to us is an outstanding manifestation of the divine image.
C.C.C. 1716-1729 What does it mean for humans to have a vocation of beatitude? • The Beatitudes are the heart of Jesus’ preaching and they respond to the natural desire for happiness that God has given to us. • God put us on earth to know, to love and to serve him and so to come to paradise. • The coming of the Kingdom of God, the vision of God, entering into the joy of the Lord, entering into God’s rest, are all expressions used to characterize the beatitude to which God calls man.
