Christian Anthropology Objectives Know of what man is composed List the Consequences of Original Sin Define:Protoevangellium
Original Justice • Mastery over • Himself • nature • Friendship w/ God • Work is not a burden • Naturally happy • Man realizes he is alone • God creates a “suitable companion”
Man in the Garden • Material body • Immaterial soul/ spirit • intellect • will • Man encounters the world via his body through his senses • The body and all creation is good
The Fall • Tempted by Satan to eat the fruit from the tree in the center of the Garden • Eve then Adam • Adam’s sin condemns us • They realize they are naked!
Original Sin • Loss of friendship w/ God • Loss of control • Over self = Concupiscence • Over nature • Sickness and death • Work as burden • Tension between man and woman • Expulsion from the Garden
Protoevangellium • The offense is against God who is infinite • Man cannot repair the damage • God could write man off • Forget the offense – unjust • God promises to send a redeemer • This is the “1st Good News!!!”
Reflection • What if only Eve had eaten the fruit? • Man is now inclined to evil • What does this say about human institutions? • How has the relationship between the sexes been affected? • How is death a remedy for sin? • Why can’t man repair the break?
