Sonnet Composed upon Westminster Bridge Sept.3,1803 By William Wordsworth Earth has not any thing to shew more fair: Dull would he be of soul who could pass by A sight so touching in its majesty: This city now doth like a garment wear The beauty of the morning; silent, bare, Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie Open unto the fields, and to the sky; All bright and glittering in the smokeless air/Never did sun more beautifully steep In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill; Ne’er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep! The river glideth at his own sweet will: Dear God! The very houses seem asleep; And all that mighty heart is lying still! Impressions du Matin An extract By Oscar Wilde The Thames nocturne of blue and gold Changed to a Harmony in grey: A barge with ochre-coloured hay Dropt from the warf: and chill and cold. The yellow fog came creeping down The bridges, till the houses’ walls Seemed changed to shadows and St. Paul’s Loomed like a bubble o’er the town….. When were the poems written? What part of London do O.Wilde and W.Wordsworth describe? What part of the day is described in these poems? What words did O.Wilde use to describe the Morning? Read the words which give the impression of Fog. What building loomed like a bubble over the town? What words did W.Wordsworth use to describe the Calmness of the Morning? What does the author mean by the words “Mighty Heart”, “Majesty”?
