About the author • He was born in San Francisco CA, in February 28, 1970. • Lemony Snicket is not his real name. His real name is Daniel Handler. • He was a orphan himself and had two other siblings. He also grew up with a terrible villain as his caretaker. • The Series of Unfortunate Events are his main books that are out right now. But he also writes picture books like The Composer Is Dead, The Lump Of Coal, and The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming.
Setting • It takes place in a town called Lake Lachrymuse during hurricane season. • There were multiple settings: • Aunt Josephine’s house • Lake Lachrymuse • Damocles dock • Curdled Cave • The main setting was Aunt Josephine’s house
characters • Violet Baudelaire- Violet is the oldest child . She is very smart. Violet also likes to invent different. She is a very strong hearted and is determined. • Klaus Baudelaire- Klaus is the middle child. He loves to read. He is very intelligent too. And is defensive of his sisters. He is also a good problem solver. • Sunny Baudelaire- Sunny is the youngest. She is a infant. She is not able to talk yet just a couple words. She loves to bit things with her four sharp teeth. • Captain Sham/Count Olaf- Olaf was the first evil caretaker who treated them trebly. He only wanted there fortune, that was his goal. • Mr. Poe- He was in change of the children when their parents die. He has chosen there caretakers. Also he stuck by them but not also believed them. • Aunt Josephine- She was there caretaker in this book. She was scared of everything and never let them do anything.
Plot • The Bauldelaire children move into Aunt Josephine’s house in Lake Lachrymuse. Aunt Josephine is their new caretaker. • They saw Count Olaf, disguised as Captain Sham in the market. The event was important because they then new he was still after them and their fortune. No one, especially Mr Poe would believe Captain Sham was Count Olaf • Aunt Josephine mysteriously disappeared by falling out a wide window. With Aunt Josephine gone Count Olaf as Captain Sham filed for the custody of the Bauldelaire children. • The children later found a note explaining Aunt Josephine was held in Curdled Cave. • The children stole a ship from Olaf and went to get Aunt Josephine. They freed Aunt Josephine but Olaf threw her overboard into Lake Lachrymuse were she was attacked by leeches and died. • Sunny bit the peg leg of Captain Sham to reveal the “eye” tattoo and uncovered Count Olaf. • Olaf got away and the children were in search of a new caretaker.
conflict/ resolution • The Baudelaire vs. Count Olaf • Count Olaf is trying to steal the Baudelaire fortune. And then dispose of them once he gets his hands on it. • The Baudelaire vs. Mr. Poe • Mr. Poe will not believe anything the children say about that Captain Sham is Count Olaf. • The resolution to the problems was that Sunny bit the peg leg to reveal the eye tattoo.
theme • The theme is to be thankful for all that you have in your life. • This theme best represents the story because it shows you what children go through went they lose their parent and all that they own but not in all cases. So just be thankful for all that you have.
Personal book review I really liked the book The Wide Window. It was filled with action and mystery. There was not a dull moment. And it was always a page turner. I would definitely recommend this book to kids my age.
