PI-RIFIC PROJECT !!! David Venner Block 4A
PI HISTORY • π is an irrational number, which means that its value cannot be expressed exactly as a fraction having integers in both the numerator and denominator • The Greek letter π was first adopted for the number as an abbreviation of the Greek word for perimeter (περίμετρος), or as an abbreviation for "periphery/diameter", by William Jones in 1706. • Pi Day is a holiday commemorating the mathematical constantπ (pi). Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 (or 3/14 in month/daydate format), since 3, 1 and 4 are the three most significant digits of π in the decimal form. • On March 12, 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution (HRES 224),[2] recognizing March 14, 2009, as National Pi Day.[9] • Pi represents the relationship between a circle’s diameter (its width) and its circumference (the distance around the circle). • At 9:26:53 on Pi Day 2015, the date will be 3/14/15 at 9:26:53, corresponding to 3.141592653.
PI POEM BY WISLAWA SZMBORSKA • The admirable number pi: three point one four one. All the following digits are also just a start, five nine two because it never ends. It can't be grasped, six five three five , at a glance, eight nine, by calculation, seven nine, through imagination, or even three two three eight in jest, or by comparison four six to anything two six four three in the world. The longest snake on earth ends at thirty-odd feet.Same goes for fairy tale snakes, though they make it a little longer. The caravan of digits that is pidoes not stop at the edge of the page, but runs off the table and into the air, over the wall, a leaf, a bird's nest, the clouds, straight into the sky, through all the bloatedness and bottomlessness.Oh how short, all but mouse-like is the comet's tail! How frail is a ray of starlight, bending in any old space!Meanwhile two three fifteen three hundred nineteenmy phone number your shirt sizethe year nineteen hundred and seventy-three sixth floornumber of inhabitants sixty-five centship measurement two fingers a charade and a code,in which we find how blithe the trostle sings!and please remain calm, and heaven and earth shall pass away, but not pi, that won't happen,it still has an okay five, and quite a fine eight, and all but final seven, prodding and prodding a plodding eternityto last. 3

Discovery of PI • A Brief History of PiAncient civilizations knew that there was a fixed ratio of circumference to diameter that was approximately equal to three. The Greeks refined the process and Archimedes is credited with the first theoretical calculation of Pi. • In 1761 Lambert proved that Pi was irrational, that is, that it can't be written as a ratio of integer numbers. • In 1882 Lindeman proved that Pi was transcendental, that is, that Pi is not the root of any algebraic equation with rational coefficients. This discovery proved that you can't "square a circle", which was a problem that occupied many mathematicians up to that time. (More information on squaring the circle.)
Summary of Findings • There are many formulas that use PI • The symbol for pi has been used regularly in its mathematical sense for the past 250 years • We can never truly measure the circumference or the area of a circle because we can never truly know the value of pi. Pi is an irrational number, meaning its digits go on forever in a seemingly random sequence • The first 144 digits of pi add up to 666 (which many scholars say is “the mark of the Beast”). And 144 = (6+6) x (6+6).d • The first six digits of pi (314159) appear in order at least six times among the first 10 million decimal places of pi.i
