Symptom Driven Blood Testing To understand what we do at Your Future Health, we need to first talk about what everyone else does. We use blood tests very differently than the rest of the world. So, how does the rest of the world utilize blood tests? “In today’s healthcare system, 95% of all blood tests are ordered in response to symptoms. No symptoms? No blood tests. That’s the system.” At YFH, we call this reactionary or symptom driven blood testing. Why? Because these blood tests are only ordered to react to an individual’s symptoms. “In today’s healthcare system, 95% of all blood tests are ordered in response to symptoms. No symptoms? No blood tests. That’s the system.”
Normal Ranges & Symptom Driven Blood Tests In symptom driven blood testing labs generate a report, called official lab results, to provide the actual blood test results for the individual being tested. This report is sent directly to the doctor who ordered the blood test. All official lab reports have some version of a normal reference range (normal range). Usually the doctor will look at the test results and compare them to the normal ranges. If your score falls within the normal range, you will most likely be told you are “normal.” So what does being normal really mean? And, is a normal blood test score a healthy score? Let’s take a look…
Who Calculates Normal Ranges and How are they Determined? Who? Normal ranges are generally calculated by each individual laboratory medical director as this individual sets the normal ranges for their lab. How? One of the most common ways normal ranges are determined is by taking a sample size (usually between 100 and 200 people) from all of the people tested by that particular lab. These people’s blood test results are then averaged. The lab medical director usually calculates 2 standard deviations to either side to set the high and the low end of the normal range. Your score for any given test is compared to this “normal” range. If it lies inside the normal range it will be considered normal. Some people think a normal score is a healthy score. Is it really?
Do “Normal” Blood Test Results = Healthy Blood Test Results? Earlier, we learned that 95% of all blood tests in this country are ordered because a person had a symptom or problem (i.e., they were sick). Does it make sense to compare your blood test results to averages taken from people who were already experiencing a symptom? Being within the normal range does not mean you are healthy. Normal blood test scores simply mean you are not yet as sick as the people used to determine the normal range. This is still a good thing, but it does not mean you are healthy. “Normal blood test scores simply mean you are not yet as sick as the people used to determine the normal range.”
Why Do Health Professionals Use Normal Ranges? Normal ranges are usually useful for diagnosing illness and disease when a person is already suffering from symptoms. That is what they were designed to do. They also help our medical system focus on the people who need treatment the most and allow the insurance companies to contain their costs. If you are interested in learning more about blood tests and normal ranges, please check out the book “Normal Blood Test Scores Aren’t Good Enough!” By Your Future Health’s Founder and CEO, Ellie Cullen. Please visit the “Resources” section of the website for more information and sample pages from the book. The following example uses actual lab results from one of our clients to demonstrate how you can develop an illness while suffering no symptoms and having “normal” blood test results.
Alkaline Phosphatase – A Real Life Example Notice how the score is within the lab “normal range.” This client was told she was normal for this particular test. Is she really “normal?”
Alkaline Phosphatase – A Real Life Example Now let’s take a look at the results from this person’s previous eleven HealthPrints…
Alkaline Phosphatase – A Real Life Example Notice how her history on this test is consistently in a narrow range until her 12th HealthPrint. YFH calls this narrow range a Personal Normal. The Personal Normal on this test is 47 – 63. Can you see that?
Alkaline Phosphatase – A Real Life Example In only 6 months, (between HealthPrint number 11 and 12), this client witnessed a significant increase in this test score to a value of 115 despite feeling no symptoms.
Alkaline Phosphatase – A Real Life Example Does this result still look “normal?”
Alkaline Phosphatase – A Real Life Example This woman’s doctor was able to justify ordering additional tests because of this blood test history. The additional tests detected bone and liver cancer. Fortunately for her, they were able to catch her disease in its earliest stages.
How is Your Future Health Different? 63% of all YFH clients say that they test for prevention purposes. -YFH Customer satisfaction Survey At Your Future Health, we have developed a system for prevention and early detection of disease that uses blood tests to help people both before and after they develop symptoms. This system is based on preventive, as opposed to symptom driven, blood testing. So how does it work?
Preventive Blood Tests Preventive blood testing (what we do) focuses on 2 other “ranges.” They are: 1. Optimum Ranges • Based on your unique biochemistry (rather than sick people) • These ranges are customized for you based on your age, gender, height/weight, health history, and other blood test scores as compared to YFH’s 40 year database • Previous personal blood test history is not needed to determine your optimum range 2. Personal Normals • This is the range that is “normal” for you based on your own blood test history • Requires consistent blood tests by YFH’s proprietary system over time in order to establish an accurate, personal trend line • Not dependent on any other factors – except your own symptom assessment and YFH blood test history
Optimum Ranges Genes and biochemistry make each person unique. So, why aren’t normal ranges individually optimized? Optimum ranges by Your Future Health are. Optimum ranges are based upon your height/weight, age, gender, health history, and other blood test scores. When you achieve your optimum ranges, your body will be operating at the levels that will help you truly be healthy. “Normal” blood test scores that are not optimum for you, can usually be improved simply by changing your diet, exercise, and supplement plans. Of course, most scores that are outside the lab normal range can also be improved through similar means. Clients who consistently achieve Optimum scores have significantly lower probabilities of developing an illness than those clients who are not able or willing to get their scores to their Optimum Ranges. Your Future Health does not sell any nutritional or food products, and we do not promote certain brands over others. Our only interest in what foods you eat and supplements you take is that you are healthy as a result. Lastly, Optimum Ranges are not based on your previous blood test history and can be calculated the very first time you test with us.
Developing Optimum Ranges While the current medical system has been focusing on sick people for years, YFH has been busy testing both sick people and healthy people. By monitoring large groups of peoples’ blood test scores and recording their nutrition plans and symptom histories, we were able to back into customized Optimum Ranges. How? • Some of the people we tested started out feeling great and still feel great today. • Others started out feeling great but then discovered one or more health problems (i.e., symptoms) along the way. Conversely: • Some of our clients started out with one or more health problems and now feel great today. • Others started out with one or more problems and still have those problems today. YFH cannot control whether people follow the nutritional suggestions we provide nor the quality of product people choose. Therefore, some people make more progress than others.
Personal Normals Blood tests, when run consistently and accurately over time, will typically vary by only a few points which creates a more narrow and more personal range. This allows each person to establish benchmarks for each, specific blood test. We call this benchmark a Personal Normal. Each person has unique Personal Normal levels for all of the measure we test in their blood. Once these are established, you can watch for changes from your Personal Normal level, as with our alkaline phosphatase example provided in an earlier slide. We have found that blood test scores often change before symptoms develop. These test score changes empower you to catch illness at its earliest stages. Let’s take another look at the alkaline phosphatase example. It is clear which result is outside this person’s Personal Normal level… 83% of all YFH clients say they feel more in control of their health since first testing with us. -YFH Customer Satisfaction Survey
Alkaline Phosphatase – A Real Life Example Although the 12th test result is “normal,” it is clearly outside of her Personal Normal. Without knowing her Personal Normal, this woman would have been unable to catch her cancer until symptoms developed.
Specialized Tests At Your Future Health, we’ve developed a system that enables us to successfully run specialized and complex tests. In fact, we are earning a reputation for being the best specialized blood testing company in America by prominent health authors, doctors, and top research and reference laboratories. I feel better now than when I was much younger.” -Pat Tag, artist, mother & grandmother
What Makes a Test Special or Complex? Some blood tests are time sensitive and need to be run within 24 to 36 hours of the blood being drawn. Some tests require very specialized equipment or highly skilled lab technicians that not every lab can afford to purchase or hire. Some tests are not covered by insurance and therefore, are generally not ordered by doctors. Some tests require being prepared for analysis within 30 to 60 minutes. If they cannot be analyzed in that timeframe, then the blood sample must be frozen. YFH manages these challenges for you to ensure accurate results.

What Customers Are Saying “I had been unable to get pregnant. No one ever asked me what I ate. The YFH system made our sons and daughter possible.” -Kristen DiNardo, Business Development Coordinator, wife & Mother Infertility Testimonial: Kristen and her husband Ron tried for 3 years to get pregnant. Getting pregnant was not the problem, however, carrying the baby to term was. After multiple miscarriages, a lot of pain, and frustration, and over $10,000 spent, they were told they were unable to consider a child to term and to consider adoption. Key points: • Kristen was told she was “normal” on all her symptom driven blood tests. • Kristen did not receive many of the specialized tests (done by YFH) that are critical for fertility, despite spending over $10,000. • Our preventive blood test system identified 23 measures that were not within Kristen’s unique Optimum Range despite being “normal.” • We also told her how to improve these measure nutritionally. • We ran the tests her insurance company and doctors would not run Thanks to YFH, Kristen and Ron are now the proud parents of three children: Brandon, Dilan, and Carli (none of which were adopted).
