Institute Goals • To appreciate and understand the CaCCSS and its focus on understanding mathematics. • To develop teachers that will be ready and willing to implement and disseminate information about the CaCCSS. • To gain knowledge about the Mathematical Practices and how they impact teaching. • To gain new mathematical knowledge . • To address equity in its role in education, in teaching, and in taking leadership. CaCCSS for ALL. • Have Fun! Build relationships.
Beliefs About Teachers and Professional Growth • All Teachers, when given adequate support and information, have the potential for becoming capable and competent teachers. They deserve to be treated with complete respect. • Everyone has valuable ideas and experiences to share and we can all benefit by learning from one another. • Professional growth involves considering the whole person – intellectually and emotionally.
Beliefs About Teachers and Professional Growth • Teachers need experience as learners and the opportunity to reflect and make sense for oneself. • Professional development must include opportunities for teachers to make connections to their classrooms. • Equity issues (i.e. race, class, gender and other forms of bias) must be addressed in leadership development – not to lay blame but to figure out better ways of educating our children.
Beliefs About Teachers and Professional Growth • Relationships are essential to promoting growth and educational change. • Learning is a life-long process. • Teachers take leadership in variety of ways. • Leadership development must include opportunity to acquire information and internalize strategies in working with colleagues.
Beliefs About Teachers Leaders and Professional Growth DYAD: • Is a listening and talking exchange between two people. • Each person is given equal time to talk. • The listener does not interpret, paraphrase, analyze, give advice, or break in. • The listener does not share anything to anyone about what the taker said. • The talker is not to criticize or complain about the listener or mutual acquaintances. Participant Expectations We will: • Participate in all activities. • Be present mentally, i.e.. no texting, email, etc. • Complete extended learning activities (homework). • Be respectful of other opinions. • NEVER TELL AN ANSWER! Practice asking good questions. • Be present physically. Be on time. • Complete the daily feedback. • Bring snacks on your assigned day. • Bus our own tables.
