  2. Core Abilities at MSCTC Students will: • Demonstrate effective communication • Demonstrate critical thinking • Demonstrate personal, social, and ethical responsibility • Demonstrate effective use of technology

  3. History of the Core Abilities • About 3 years ago there was a faculty group that drafted a list of core goals. • All faculty were surveyed to select their top choices. • Those that rose to the top became our proposed core abilities. • It was then brought to the AASC and was given approval.

  4. Core Abilities at MSCTC Students will: • Demonstrate effective communication • Demonstrate critical thinking • Demonstrate personal, social, and ethical responsibility • Demonstrate effective use of technology

  7. Institutional Assessment • Where do we begin? How do we start? 1) We integrate the Core Abilities into our program/course action plans. 2) Develop strategy for assessing them college wide.

  8. Do we have a plan?Yes we do! • It was approved in July by AASC • We will pilot the assessment of the first core ability “Effective Communication” this fall. • We need volunteers of an evendistribution from all four campuses.

  9. What then?? • Review how the pilot went • Make the necessary changes in the spring • We will then plan to “Go Live” with the institutional assessment of Effective Communication in the fall of 2008 with all technical programs and general education divisions participating

Calendar for Institutional Assessment 1) Demonstrate Effective Communication Fall 07- Pilot Spring 08- CAC review pilot and implement suggested changes 2008-2009- collect data 2) Demonstrate Critical Thinking Spring of 09- prepare for implementation 2009-2010- collect data 3) Demonstrate Social and Ethical Responsibility Spring of 2010- prepare for implementation 2010-2011- collect data 4) Demonstrate Effective Use of Technology Spring 2011- prepare for implementation 2011-2012- collect data

  11. Effective Communication Fall 07- Pilot Spring 08- CAC review pilot and implement suggested changes 2008-2009- collect data

  12. How do we do this? • We use a common rubric just for the institutional assessment portion. • Faculty can use their own rubric for course/program assessment. • One has been developed for the first core ability “demonstrate effective communication”.

  13. Who will we submit it to? • Carolyn Glesne • Using the standard reporting tool • The CAC will review the college wide data and help set institutional actions that improve student achievement in the Core Abilities.

Charge of the CAC • To ensure that • the college’s Assessment Plan meets the needs of the college in its quest to continually improve • the plan aligns with the college’s mission and purposes and is aimed at improving student learning • the implementation of the plan meets the standards of the North Central Association, specifically.

  17. The CAC will, • provide planning and oversight for the institutional assessment plan, including helping set target goals for achievement of Core Abilities and reviewing assessment data to help set actions. • develop processes and procedures that will facilitate and support the implementation of the institutional action plan. • review assessment and ensure ongoing sustainability of the assessment process. • represent the faculty and help address concerns and ideas faculty have for assessment strategy.

  20. Direct Assessment Tools • You will need activities to directly assess the core ability. • That is where the D2L modules will come in to play. • These are lessons that can be modified so that you use them in your classes.
