Newman’s Signature • Barnett Newman was among the most extreme of the Abstract Expressionists • His paintings drenched viewers in color, he interpreted space as color, and he created huge paintings that engulf the viewer to make his idea of space more apparent • “It is interesting to me to notice how difficult it is for people to take the intense heat and blaze of my color. If my paintings were empty they could take them with ease….Also, I have never manipulated colors– I have tried to create color.” • Newman developed the “zip”, which refers to a band or stripe painted vertically or sometimes horizontally on his paintings that became his signature • The “zip” acts like an opening within the picture field and interrupts a unified color field, it functions as a break in the canvas • He later turned this band into sculpture • http://www.walkerart.org/resources/res_pc_newman.html
