  3. John’s Purpose “But these are written so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and by believing you may have life in His name.” John 20:31 (HCSB) John’s Gospel is: Apologetic Leading us to believe Evangelistic Compelling us to repent

Who was John? • John was a Palestinian and a Galilean • Father was Zebedee, wealthy Fisherman • Mother was Salome, devout follower of Jesus • Disciple of John the Baptist • Member of Jesus’ inner circle • Leader of the Church at Jerusalem • Brother James, martyred by Herod • John was banished to the Isle of Patmos • Served as the Pastor/Elder at Ephesus • Died around a.d. 100

  9. Holy Spirit • Teaches and remind us of Christ's words • Reveals the truth • Empowers the witness of Christ’s followers • Convicts the hearts of men and women “All of these actions of the Holy Spirit are parallel to the work of Jesus on earth”

  10. Resurrection • John was an eyewitness of Christ’s physical resurrection • This reality changed the disciples from frightened deserters to dynamic leaders in the new church • The same power that raised Christ to life can give us the ability to follow Christ each day
