factoring by grouping • A method for grouping the terms of a polynomial in such a way that the polynomial can be factored even though its greatest common factor is 1.
factored form • An expression written as a product.
factoring • Writing a polynomial as the product of two or more simpler polynomials.
prime polynomial • A polynomial that cannot be factored using only integer coefficients.
perfect square trinomial • A trinomial that can be factored as the square of a binomial.
quadratic equation • An equation that can be written in the form ax2 + bx + c = 0, where a, b, and c are real numbers, with a ¹ 0.
standard form of a complex number • The standard form of a complex number is a + bi.
standard form of a linear equation • A linear equation in two variables written in the form Ax + By = C, with A and B not both zero.
standard form of a quadratic equation • A quadratic equation written in the form ax2 + bx + c = 0, where a ¹ 0.
hypotenuse • The longest side in a right triangle opposite the right angle.
legs of a right triangle • The two shorter sides of a right triangle are called the legs.
