Introductory AlgebraGlossary Unit Six
rational expression • The quotient of two polynomials with denominator not zero, an algebraic fraction.
constant of variation • In the equation y = kx, the number k.
inverse variation • y varies inversely as x if there is a constant k such that y = k / x.
linear inequality in two variables • A linear inequality in two variables can be written in the form • Ax + By < C or Ax + By > C, • where A, B, and C are real numbers and A and B are not both zero.
boundary line • In the graph of a linear inequality, the line separating the region that satisfies the inequality from the region that does not.
components • In an ordered pair (x, y), x and y are called the components
relation • A set of ordered pairs.
domain • The set of all first components (x-values) in the ordered pairs of a relation
range • The set of all second components (y -values) in the ordered pairs of a relation.
function • A set of ordered pairs in which each first component corresponds to exactly one second component.
