1. What are some physical and emotional effects of stress? Coping with Loss Tension headaches, increase in blood pressure, irritability, confusion, stress related illnesses (because of weakened immune system) Loss can cause stress.
Some Stress Related Diseases and Disorders • Tension headaches, migraines • Cold and flu, asthma • Backaches • TMJ • Chronic fatigue, insomnia • Anxiety disorder, depression • Others???
The grieving process 2. Grieve – express deep sadness because of loss • 3. Five stages of grieving process • Denial: gives you a chance to think about the situation • Anger: normal to blame yourself or others for the loss • Bargaining: promise to change • Depression: short term is normal • Acceptance: learn how to live with the loss
Funerals, Wakes, and Memorial Services • Purpose for the following is: 4. It helps the family get through the grieving process. • Funeral – ceremony in which deceased person is eulogized and buried. • Wake – view or watch over deceased person before funeral. • Memorial Service – ceremony to remember the deceased.(Body may or may not be at the memorial service)
Help for dealing with loss 5. Helping yourself • Get plenty of rest/relaxation but stick to any normal routine • Share memories • Express your feelings • Don’t blame yourself Video/5:38 • 6. Helping someone else • Show your support through simple actions • Let the person know you are there for him/her • Tell the person they are strong and will learn to live with the loss

Facts about suicide • 8. Many people who consider suicide only do so for a brief period in their life and are really crying out for help • 9. Most people who have attempted and failed are usually glad to be alive and didn’t really want to die. • 10. Suicide has many warning signs • 11. Use of drugs/alcohol can put people at risk because of impaired judgment.

14. Warning signs for suicide • Feeling hopeless • Withdrawing from family and friends • Neglecting appearance/basic needs • Experiencing loss of energy • Taking more risks • Using alcohol and drugs • Giving away personal things Video/4:29
15. What are some things you can do to help? • Take all talk of suicide seriously • Tell your friend suicide is not the answer • Change negative thoughts into positive ones • Don’t keep a secret and tell a trusted adult
