Origin & Early Divergences • Primates evolved from small, rodent-like mammals (tree shrews) that moved into the trees 60 million years ago. • Then prosimians evolved • Then tree-dwelling anthropoids evolved eventually leading to the divergence of first hominoids • Later, the first hominoids (ape-like forms) evolved and radiated through Africa, Europe and southern Asia.

  3. Emergence of Early Humans • Evolved from ape-like ancestors • Divergences led to the australopiths-the first hominids; human-like in a crucial respect and walked upright. • Australopiths – Australopithecus and Paranthropus • Oldest fossils to be classified in the genus Homo are known as Homo habilis.
