Musculoskeletal/Dermatology Clerkship

An integrated approach to rheumatology, orthopedics, sports medicine, physical therapy, dermatology, and histopathology. Enhance skills in physical diagnosis and treatment of common musculoskeletal and dermatologic conditions. Conduct thorough exams, understand pathophysiology, diagnostic tests, and treatments. Logistics include active learning, didactics, and self-learning. Evaluation through computer-based exams and student/faculty assessments.

  1. Musculoskeletal/Dermatology Clerkship Mandatory 4th Year Medical Student 4 week Clerkship

  2. Summary of Clerkship • Integrated approach • Rheumatology, orthopedics, sports medicine, physical therapy, dermatology, histopathology, radiology, self learning • Enhance basic skills • Physical diagnosis • Treatment • Common musculoskeletal & dermatologic conditions

  3. Musculoskeletal (MS) Goals • Conduct total body MS exam to detect overt abnormal findings • Articular process • Emergencies; injuries; inflammatory vs non-inflammatory • Periarticular process • Bursitis; tendonitis; etc • Systemic process • Osteoporosis; autoimmune; etc

  4. MS Goals (cont) • Understand common MS terms and use appropriately • Recognize and understand the pathophysiology of major diagnoses • Acquire a general understanding of the diagnostic tests used in evaluating MS and rheumatic conditions • Become familiar with basic MS radiology

  5. MS Goals (cont) • Become familiar with first line treatments of the major diagnoses • Recognize when referral for ortho/rheum/sports med/PT is appropriate

Dermatology Goals • Conduct a total body skin exam & detect abnormal/suspicious findings • Gain understanding of commonly used terms • Recognize most common neoplastic/inflammatory conditions • Become familiar with basic histopathology • Become familiar with first line procedures & treatments • Know when dermatology referral is indicated

  7. Logistics • Active learning (70% of time) • USF PT, USF Sports Med, Ortho Clinics (FOI & Private), USF Rheum, USF Derm, MS Radiology, Histopathology • Didactics (10% of time) • USF PT (Dr. Quillen); USF Sports Med (Dr. Coris); USF Rheum Conference (weekly); USF Dermatology Conference (twice weekly) • Self-Learning (20% of time) • ACR slide collection, AAD website with slide collection, Pocket Guide to MS Assessment (with CD-ROM), Rheum & Derm Primers

  8. Evaluations • Students • Computer-based, case-oriented, integrated exam • Honors/Pass/Fail • Top 10% get Honors • Too little personal contact for faculty to evaluate • Clerkship • Students evaluate at the end of every clerkship • Faculty evaluate at the end of academic year
