Matter… • Matter is ANY substance that has a MASS and takes up SPACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How would you determine the mass? • Mass is determined using the TRIPLE BEAM BALANCE. • Graduated cylinder is used to determine the volume of a liquid.
Which two physical properties does all matter have in common? • All matter must have a MASS AND TAKE UP SPACE. Volume is SPACE.
Volume of a liquid… • Graduated cylinders are used to measure the volume of a liquid. • Graduated cylinders are labeled in mL (milliliters). • mL is a derivative of LITERS!
Units for density… • Density is the mass/volume. • Mass units are grams. • Volume is mL or cm3. • Therefore, the units for density is g/mLor g/ cm3.
3 states of matter.. • Solid • Liquid • Gas
Making sheets of metal… • If you are making sheets of metal, you need to make sure that the metal can be made FLAT. • Ductility – stretch into a wire • Luster – shiny • Malleability – hammer into a thin sheet • Boiling point – the temperature when a liquid begins to turn into a gas
Coolants for motors.. • Coolants keep the motor “cool”. • If a liquid keeps a metal cool, then it must be able to absorb A LOT OF HEAT before it boils. • Specific heat – how much heat an object can hold before it starts to heat up. • Boiling point – the temperature when a substance turns from a liquid to a gas.
Why is copper used for electrical wiring… • Conductivity – it allows electricity to flow through it. • Ductility – it is able to stretch into a thin wire.
Solve for density. • D = m/v • D = 5g/20mL • D = 0.25 g/mL
Polarity.. • “like dissolves like” • Polar dissolves polar • Salt is polar. • Water is polar. • Oil and alcohol are nonpolar. • Salt will dissolve in water! • Oil doesn’t dissolve in water because it is NONPOLAR AND WATER IS POLAR.
Sand vs. water… • It takes a small amount of heat to make sand “hot”. • It takes a large amount of heat to make water “hot”. • Sand = low specific heat. • Water = high specific heat.
Water’s density is 1.0g/mL • If something floats, it must be less dense than whatever substance it is floating oil. • Object A = 0.81g/mL. This is the only answer choice that is less than 1.0g/mL.
#16… • The answer is corrosiveness.
#17… • The answer is solubility. • Remember, if I dissolve anything in water, all I have to do to get it back is LET THE WATER EVAPORATE!
Melting ice.. • Ice = H2O • Water = H2O • I have not changed the identity of the substance. • I have changed the PHASE of matter of the substance from a solid to a liquid. • This is a PHYSICAL CHANGE.
Physical changes… • They do NOT CHANGE the identity… • Tear paper – it’s still paper…just a different shape • Dissolve sugar in water – get it back by letting the water evaporate • Mixing sugar in salt – no reaction… • Chemical – REMOVING TARNISH FROM A PENNY WITH LEMON JUICE!
5 INDICATORS OF A CHEMICAL REACTION • Forms a precipitate.. • Heat is evolved.. • BUBBLES or a gas is produced… • Light is produced… • A change in color…
Cornflakes… • If I put an amount of cornflakes in a bag and get the mass it will equal some number… • If I DON’T ADD OR REMOVE any from the bag and only crush them up, it will equal the same mass!!!
Alka-Seltzer • An alka-seltzer reacts with water.. • How do we know? • Look for the indicators.. • It produces GAS!
How would you recover salt from salt water? • LET THE WATER DISSOLVE!
Water… • No matter how much water you have, it will ALWAYS begin to freeze at 0C and boil at 100C. • The opposite of freezing is melting. If water melts at 0C, then it will freeze at 0C!
