International Service- encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace
Benefits of Int’l Service • Can help the less fortunate in other countries • Get to work with other Rotary clubs • Promotes world peace and understanding • Can be used to increase membership
Rotary International • In June 2007, the Board of Directors approved the RI Strategic Plan 2007-10, which identifies seven priorities: • Eradicate polio. • Advance the internal and external recognition and public image of Rotary. • Increase Rotary’s capacity to provide service to others. • Expand membership globally in both numbers and quality. • Emphasize Rotary’s unique vocational service commitment. • Optimize the use and development of leadership talents within RI. • Fully implement the strategic planning process to ensure continuity and consistency throughout the organization.
PolioPlus • Contribute to Rotary's $200 Million Challenge • Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge is the Rotary Foundation's response to the two grants totaling $355 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help eradicate polio. Every dollar given to PolioPlus will be counted toward the $200 million match, which must be completed by 30 June 2012.
Facts about Polio • Was “the AIDS of its’ time” • Vaccine developed in 1955 • Remains endemic in Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, and Nigeria • Outbreaks occur in other areas that were previously polio-free • March of Dimes started in 1937
Franklin Roosevelt is on the USA dime because of his fundraising efforts for the development of a vaccine for polio
Matching Grants • District Designated Grants • Maximum $2000 per club each year from District • Rotary International Grants • Match of dollars committed by Rotary Clubs • Min. $5000 USD (total project min. $10,000 USD) • Currently 2009-2010 RI funds have been committed • Former Wild Rose (AB government) • Matching grant • Details of replacement slowly coming to light
Our Current Budget Not shown are projects that do not require funding (Group Study Exchange and Birthday Cards to Rostov, Russia)
Belize Literacy Program • Goal - to bring updated curriculum, technology, and training to the Belizean education system • First project of its’ kind – other district’s are watching to see if it works and can be duplicated • 60% population under 24 • Annual budget/goal of $60,000 (depending on support of clubs)

Belize Literacy Program • Our 2008-2009 support went to a scholarship program ran by Vegreville Rotary Club (ancillary project) • This year $1,000 will be directed to District Project as our club’s contribution • More information on district website
Bolivian-Canadian Clean Water Network • Goal - to improve health of impoverished Bolivians through access to safe drinking water and hygiene education • Biosand filters: • are a well known water treatment method developed in Canada • There are over 75,000 in use worldwide • Last year’s budget was $40,000
Bolivian-Canadian Clean Water Network • 2006-2009 – we have donated $10,000! • 2009-2010 – donate $4,000 in 2009-2010 and apply for District Designated Grant of $2,000 • 2010-2011 – to apply for an RI matching grant for a $10,000USD project • More info at http://bccwater.weebly.com/ and www.cawst.org/
Agape Orphanage • Goal - to give Malawian orphans, many due to AIDS, a nurturing home and a chance through education • Started in 2002 by Diane Block from Stony Plain • Annual budget of $80,000
Agape Orphanage USA Mexico Malawi
Agape Orphanage • Kevin and Trevor are overseeing this project! • 2008-2009 – donated $4,000 • 2009-2010 – support of $3,000, preferably toward improving sustainability of orphanage and finding a grantable project for the future • 2010-2011 – undertake a grantable project • More info at http://agapeorphans.com/index.html
Chalabana Community School • Goal – build a school through a partnership with VSDAS (Village School Development and Aid Society) • VSDAS’ mandate is to relief poverty through education and micro-projects in Zambia • In Zambia no school means no trained teachers and high dropout rates, especially for women • Option to: • provide ongoing aid to a 3rd world community (“adopt a community”) • go to Zambia and build the school
Chalabana Community School Zambia
Chalabana Community School • No prior support • VSDAS is ran by one of the Rotoractor’s fathers (Patrick Mpulubsi) • 2009-2010 - $3,000 in budget • If we plan on going to Zambia we should help VSDAS raise more money or commit to future support • More info at http://www.vsdas.org/
Other Priorities • Recruit GSE (Group Study Exchange) team member – this actually a vocational project • Thank Alex for sending birthday cards to Rostov, Russia (Alex’s former club) • Investigate future Friendship Exchange with Rostov, Russia
Challenges • RI matching grants require a minimum of $5,000USD • If all possibilities for grantable projects work out we need to (a) increase future budgets or (b) get other clubs on board • We have a lot of small projects, which requires a lot of manpower • Need to leave club some future flexibility
